We've all discussed on here the inadequacies of the leppings lane end and this is after it was made all seater. The very same posters condemning the Liverpool supporters have at one time or another complained about the crushing on the internal concourse at half time and rightly so, it's a complete accident waiting to happen. However, should we ever see serious injury or heaven forbid a fatality would they blame our own fans for pushing or charging or the badly thought out stadium? Bit of both isn't it really.
There were serious incidents of crushing on that leppings lane end throughout the 80s in Cup semis. It was an accident waiting to happen. Circumstances and a clueless cheif superintendent didn't help matters in April 1989. There's a case for everyone involved that day to have guilt and regret. It's exactly like any other football disaster. The Burnden disaster in the 40s was caused by crushing and overcrowding. The Ibrox disaster was another waiting to happen. All tragic occurrences and you feel for the victims and their families.
There's an unfair stigma with the Hillsborough disaster even to this day. The way football fans were treated back then combined with the poor facilities meant that something like that was always in the offing. Like owt else in life though it took the loss of lives to address the situation seriously and football grounds updated.
That leppings lane stand should be condemned even today imo. It's a terrible design and despite the improvements since 1989 it still has potential to cause injury or even worse. Then again, us as human beings have potential to cause death or injury too. It's not a nice situation
