Last Friday would have been the 73rd birthday of the brilliant Mooney. It is now 41 years since he sadly burnt himself out. Thanks for the memories.

I read his biography written by his chaffeur / minder, absolutely hilarious.
I was at a City Boy concert at Wolves Civic when they announced he had been found dead that morning. That was a Thursday night, i had the Friday off work in sympathy.
The Who are the best live group i saw, but Moonie had died than and Kenny Jones was the drummer.
I never saw The Who live unfortunately but a guy I worked with who saw them around 1970 with Keith Moon said they were the best live act he had ever seen, and this guy had seen Hendrix, Jerry Lee Lewis, Frank Zappa etc. The Who's Live at Leeds is regarded as one of the best live albums ever. I have seen some top bands in the late sixties and early seventies such as Led Zeppelin in 1969 and Pink Floyd in 1968 but for sound quality live the two best concerts i have witnessed were Talk Talk and The Blue Nile. Maybe it was because sound equipment had improved over the years.
Was lucky to see them twice at B'ham Town hall. Great concerts, great live band.
Loved B'ham Town Hall as a music venue. Zeppelin, Floyd, Rory G. Bowie, Curved Air, Procol Harum, Loudon Wainwright III, Roberta Flack, even saw Elton John when his band was just him, a bass player and a drummer, long before he turned into that screaming queen. Great days.
oh so very true mate, gigs in the 60s-70s by the bands that were in reality were just starting up.the old grey matter going a bit now but I saw the who at the old hill plaza with moon on drums almost sure it’s when they had just released I’m a boy,and we all said what a fuc#ing nutter but what a drummer.and the best part of the gigs in the 60s you could get in for just a few Bob,before the big venues took over.when I first saw Chris farlow in West Brom at the Adelphi it wasn’t much more than 7/6.1965 in London in a place called the attic r&b club (what a ****ole) for 10/6 the Rolling Stones.what great days to be a teenager bands coming out your earholes.back to the who, well i can say proudly I saw one of the worlds greatest bands in ther infancy.P,S how many remember the bolero club later (the Montana I think) late 60s every Tuesday slade.todays kids and youth have got **** al sad really.
Haven't been to a concert since 1982 that was to see Elkie Brooks with my wife to be. The last 2 before that was Bob Marley last UK concert in Stafford 1980 and Frank Sinatra at the Royal Albert hall late 70s
The original Who were the greatest live act I ever saw and I have seen them all, well most of them. I saw them a number of times including at the IOW a lot of which is on You Tube. Worth looking at to get an idea of just how great they were. Who's Next and Quadrophenia were their peak achievements. I have read the very long book Dear Boy by Tony Fletcher also published under the title Moon - The life and death of a Rock Legend, which I also have. If you have the stamina it is worth reading.
I also saw a young relatively unknown Elton John at Brum Town Hall. Jethro Tull (1970) were one of the best acts I saw there.
You were brilliant Mooney!!
Here's my list of the live concerts I've seen
jamiroquai (cus the wife was a fan) David Whitfield (doh ask) Howard Keele, Petula Clark, Klaus Wunderlich, Jean Michel Jarre, Ulrich Schnauss, Brian Wilson, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, John Barry, Tom Jones, 10CC. What a line up eh?
