The 80’s was a fantastic decade.

I’m glad I lived it in my 19-29 pomp......probably the best of my six decades even though I didn’t have a great job or earn much in that period.

When I look back I see only good times and the U.K. and world in general seemed full of positivity.

The 70’s were dark and dire.

Lucky that a ragtag conscripted army went into the Falklands, to boost her popularity at a time when she was floundering in the polls and hanging onto her political career by a thread. Lucky that she inherited billions of pounds worth of north sea oil revenue every year, which she pi55ed up the wall by giving tax cuts to the rich. That cash injection helped prop the country up in the 80's against record levels of unemployment and high interest rates. Along with the bog standard lack of public spending you always get under the Tories...

Contrast that with Blair, he trebled the NHS budget in his first term, when he came into power in 1997. introduced the minimum wage, employed thousands more teachers, nurses, police, doctors and fireman. He doubled the education budget. Reduced waiting times at NHS. Lifted thousands of pensioners out of poverty. We had low interest rates and 10 years of continuous economic growth.

He gets vilified now for the Iraq war and maybe he deserves it. But his domestic record was fantastic.
I served in the Falklands, not during the invasion, but a few months later...I was not a conscript, nor was I a ragtag soldier...I will happily meet you anytime, anywhere, and you can say it to my face...if you've got the balls

"Lucky that a ragtag conscripted army went into the Falklands"

You do realise I was referring to the Argentinian and not the British Army right? You even said in your answer you weren't conscripted...

As for your 2nd statement, I'll happily back up anything I type in person. Send me a private message if you still feel the need to. My next home game is Charlton.

Having re-read the thread sober,I admit that I misinterpreted your comments re ragtag army etc...nevertheless,I think that most of your comments regarding Thatcher are typical Morning Star claptrap,on the matter of financial inequality, ask the tens of thousands of people who were able to buy their council houses if they feel hard done by !

Understand, you refer to the ragtag Argentine Militarily. However, they did enough damage from the air did they not.

Mrs T did what she did, what was needed at the time. The UK had been through dark times, she led them out of those darkest of times. It hurt some but if something is not worth keeping then what is the option?

Those that sang the ding dong song should hold their heads in shame.

Quite right Greyhound. Morning Star Claptrap. The guys just a keyboard warrior who would never have the ba*ls to say things he says on here to peoples faces but hey, from the safety of your keyboard you can say what you like to anyone..yes? As for having a meet up at Charlton with you...LOL. Yes. That’s really going to happen with thousands of people around right? LOL. You got more chance of winning euro millions than him turning up and there will probably be a queue in front of you 😀

Fair play fella as you served in the conflict. I didn’t but have a 20 year background in martial arts including 6 or so years training in self defence with the military. Spent quite a bit of time with UK forces over the years at training camps and at exhibitions at places like the NEC and got to know a few who served in the Falklands. Everything I heard was it was no picnic but a bloody hard slog. Yes the Argentinians were a conscripted army but they were dug in and had home advantage. The post script is that we could have easily lost that conflict if certain people bother to read about it but we didn’t.

I also spent some time in Argentina including time in Ushuaia where their invasion force sailed from. Whilst it’s still a hot potato over there, it’s a doubled edged sword as we helped rid them of a military who killed 70,000 of their own people, so many of them I spoke to whilst pi*sed off about ownership of the islands felt it was a good thing their dictatorship came up against a real army and in that respect we did them a massive favour.

So, ‘ragtag’ army is a term born out of ignorance and disrespects soldiers on both sides. I read his comments correctly first time and they’re disrespectful. As you say, left wing claptrap that dismissed a serious military conflict where people on all sides lost too many. Nice to see you posting👍

    Well said Stripes.

Idiots like 123 need to do a bit more homework before gobbing off.

I’d suggest searching out the BBC documentary on Simon Weston the Falklands war hero.

Filmed from the moment the 20 year old was pulled out of his ship after it was bombed by the “Rag tag army”.

For 123’s information the Argie pilots were renowned as some of the most skilful and deadly pilots on the planet at that time!

Follow Simon’s battle for life and look at subsequent programmes on this fine man.

A man we could all take a few pointers from in life.
