He’s a donkey anyway and brings nothing to the team, I think Ashley only brought him in as a publicity stunt to sell some of his SDFC Season Tickets

It's possible that he isn't really injured. It's possible that Bruce may want to try out Gayle.
After all, Carroll is more of a geordie dressing room fit in and a match stopgap.
It could be about balancing it all out without upsetting the applecart, sort of thing.
If Gayle was put in ahead of a fit/fitter Carroll there may be a bit of a "what's going on" scenario, considering Gayle's been out for so long.
By saying Carroll has a niggle it's sort of making an easy case to simply help Gayle and cotton wool wrap Carroll.
Possible, maybe?
