Rivalry does exist in sport. Only football brings out the worst in the people of both Islands. At no other inter insular sporting event has there been arrests other than football. That is my point. Rugby, and other sports, do not have a moronic following like football does.

I have relatives on both Island's and when we meet up the banter is great. Clean, friendly but funny.

Perhaps you met with a non local who does not actually understand the friendship between the two Islands.

I visit Jersey regularly and love it. Speaking to the few locals left there, they seem to like Guernsey. A large percentage of Jersey's population are not local as opposed to Guernsey where 85% are.

Unfortunately some people take the rivalry to another level.

If you visit Jesrey again and you like good Indian try Jaipur opposite the Liberation bus Station, for Italian you could not beat La Cantina on Cheapside. Best food at excellent prices.

I guess the best thing about being from these islands is we have etiquette and we are British and not part of the UK. I think all Channel Islanders agree on that.
I agree with your Jersey anecdotes BMG.

I usually stay at The Atlantic Hotel in St Ouens right next to the golf course,a lovely hotel in a great position.

If I could live anywhere in the U.K. it would be Jersey.

People in Jersey have always indicated to me that they are Guernsey as backward and full of inbreds 😆

    No offence 😆

By the way.....we used to use a fantastic restaurant on Guernsey called “Crabby Jacks”........is it still there?

In St Ouens we use a superb beachfront restaurant called “El Tico” which does fantastic seafood and burgers but get there early in season.

No offence taken. I am from split parentage, one from each island, so I can say what I wish. Perhaps it was Jersey’s way of helping to reduce the inbred blood stock of Guernsey. And you said it was the Guern’s who had a chip on their shoulder.

I recall when Bergerac was popular on tv, many cars in Guernsey had stickers on them, which read ‘Bergerac holidays in Guernsey’.

Another time, and although it made most in both Islands laugh, I think the chap lost his job, because there were complaints. He had just finished reading the news and sports news, which was in those days broadcast from Jersey, when he completed with this, “Well that is the news from around the islands today. My girlfriend has asked me if I could kiss her somewhere wet and smelly, so we are off to Guernsey for the weekend, good evening”.

Generally stay at the Pom d’or in St Helier, though have tempted by the Yacht around the corner, the Pom d’or has always been good to us so we stick there. Stayed in St Brelades Bay a couple of times, nice down there in the summer months.

Crabbies (Crabby Jacks) is still there. It is on the west coast, however, it is a place frequented by families so there are a lot of kids there and, as I read on your other post, it might not be as it was? It is nearly always noisy, though a large outdoor play area reduces that once they finish eating. Great if we take all our family out for a birthday treat/ or a lead up to Christmas treat, but it is not a quiet place. Should you ever visit again, there are some great eateries around St Peter Port. ’Red’ is good, ‘China Red’ (Chinese) better than anything I have had anywhere Chinese wise, though not cheap. “The old Quarter” is one of my favourites.

And the cliffs, if you do visit and like to walk, walk the south cliffs from St Peter Port to Plienmont. Takes a good few hours and it is not for the faint hearted but the views etc are quite spectacular, on a nice day of course.

I have some friends who have probably visited Guernsey 50 times over the years and we went with them a couple of times. Have to say, would like to get back there as we really liked it. We stayed at The De Havelet in St Peters Port. Good location and they had a good restaurant there at the time. Another place we found that did great seafood near our hotel was Dix Neuf (if I got that right?) We did a great coastal walk from our hotel which was stunning ending up at a large hotel called Fermain Valley (I think?). Lovely part of the world.

Thanks Stripes. Hotel de Havelet is still there, nice place with a newish restaurant called Copenhagen, which gets good reviews. Dix-Nuef in the Arcade is still there and popular.

The Island is a lovely place to live although, I probably take it for granted, so don’t necessarily see it’s good side. It is getting a little crowded though to many people living in too small an area. We get around 80 Cruise ships visiting each year which is boosting a flagging tourism trade, so there must something nice about the place.

If ever you visit give us a shout and we can go for a beer.

It’s a lovely part of the world you’re in BMG. I hear like everywhere it has it’s not so good spots but the bits I have seen are stunning. Also, having visited 35 or so countries, Guernsey and Cornwall still give anywhere I’ve ever been a good run for fresh seafood.

I remember with great affection a rather drunken afternoon in St Peters Port ( near Lloyd’s Bank) going to a pub called The Library ? Did great Sunday lunches and had a library inside ( the clues in the name Lol) Yes. Lovely spot you’re in. Are you a natural resident or did you move there? My friends were looking at buying but the non local market prices are scary.

Stripes, I think you should head up our Tourism Committees!
The hotel with the Lbrary bar is Moore’s Hotel, which I think is owned by Best Western, same group that own the Hotel de Havelet.

Unfortunately, the Library bar no longer exists, it was subject to a refit last year and is now called JB Parker’s Bar & Cellar. The old Library Bar did do a very good roast, nearest to a home roast I have had out.

The seafood is great and yes I am from these waters, though of mixed Channel Island parents, who have French descendants and a touch of Irish to throw into the mix. I am lucky in the respect that I could buy on local market housing. Open market is only for the millionaires, though there are few open market properties that go for less than a million, however, they are not up to much to be fair. Still horses for course I guess.
You would not like it here today, it is chucking it down.

I remember a taxi driver telling me that a very average 1 bedroom flat in a not great area would cost an outsider around 500K. I think the prices are around 3 x times local rates aren't they for property?

Back on the subject of the rugby, I see England are looking at a fine as they were deemed to be disrespectful to the Haka.

So, it's OK for NZ to get psyched up pre-match and the opponents are not allowed to show anything but utter respect? What next? Kiss their as**? So much for a level playing field eh? Surely within reason, the opponents should be able to deal with this 'challenge' as they see fit and not be disadvantaged? Seems to me that some of the NZ fans who took offence ought to learn a bit of dignity in defeat and stop being snow flakes.

Opposition teams should be allowed their right to respond to the Haka with their own country’s choice of reply.

We should make NZ stand there and watch us do five minutes of Morris Dancing!
