    I think the playoff format in the National League is more interesting and fairer than the one used in the Football League, in that it pays much more respect to final league placings over 46 games. In the FL, the only advantage the team who just miss out on automatic promotion has over a team that finished four places (and maybe 20 points) behind them is to get home advantage in the semi-final second leg. Does that really reward their efforts over 46 games? In the NL, in order go up the teams in 6th and 7th places have to win two away games and the final to go up, and the teams in 4th and 5th places have to win a home then away tie and the final to succeed. The 2nd and 3rd placed teams have to win a home tie and the final to get promoted.

    A big incentive for us to at least make the top three if we can't manage the top one.

    Definitely. The format in the league actually seems to favour the team sneaking into the last playoff place rather than the team who just missed out on automatic, purely from a mental perspective. I really like the format in the NL.
