Before you set up your own site you have to try and understand a number of things. Why are the majority of Mad sites so moribund? Why have posters left MM? But here the analysis has to be honest and not simply the encapsulation of an individual's untested and prejudiced hypothesis. It's possible that football - by its nature essentially a passive activity for most supporters - is not intrinsically interesting. Forums I frequent on other activities are largely populated by people doing the activity and they tend to post to share experiences, provide insights, comment on rules, scenarios, approaches to various products and services etc, etc.
If you set up a site based on false premises or in pursuit of a constituency that doesn't exist in reality you will fail. Exeter set up Banter as a vanity project. It was essentially promoted as the antithesis of something that already existed, the Anti-Mad to Millers Mad. Countless posts there referred to how nasty MM was and how MB was so much better, more adult. It was a nonsense from the beginning and the same phenomena of wind-ups, cliques and bullying soon emerged. If you want a site that reflects your own views and prejudices, then great, but pretty soon you'll be talking to yourself. On MB there was at one time a thriving OT board. Several members objected and in a short space of time the three or four main OT contributors disappeared off and now you get perhaps one or two OT posts (posts not threads) a season.

The time may be prevalent where you could set your own site up, I'm confident a lot would respond and you could retire and fly over more often just using the advert commission
It's a thought Brin but not sure my marketing skills would be good enough to make it financially viable. I was pondering a name for the site that would portray the essence of a welcoming place to visit. The Mrs reckons my choice of CAMiller's Back Door might put off a few people and get me in trouble with royalty.

This reminds me of a failed project of mine to set up a microbrewery. Apparently the slogan wasn't quite right: "Get arrseholed; Drink Wrecked'em Ales."

I use a PC with Windows 7 and my browser is Firefox with ad-Block and UBlock add ons. I have never seen a single advert but my blockers show me they have blocked 13 and 15 respectively. I don't own a mobile phone or laptop and have never accessed MM other than through this PC so can't comment on other devices.

This site would be dead if it was just football.

Well said, Wan. Perhaps unpalatable to some but true nonetheless. I come on because I like to see how some old Rotherhamites are getting on. My favourite threads are about books, films and music and I miss BigLad.
If I want some in-depth analysis on football I don't seek it on MM and RUFC news I can get elsewhere. There is really very little of interest to say about football on a day-to-day basis.

No it would not, some would come back that want to actually talk about football instead of politics to which them posters only come on here for.

    Yes I agree.

However if it was football only then one of our regular posters would go and his alternative log in “mate” would go with him. Like a 2 for 1 deal

This is simply a supposition. It's not supported by the evidence and it doesn't make sense on the facts. Why do OT posts put people off posting or responding to football posts? They can simply ignore them as I ignore 70% of posts on MM.
What can you find to discuss about football sufficient to support a site day-to-day? The reality is that on many footie posts someone states that they don't like what the manager is doing, or they don't rate player A or they think a different system should be tried. Immediately then a number of diehards come on to shoot the poster down saying to the effect "How long have you been a professional football manager? In Warne we trust. UTM" Debate over until the next time when exactly the same response emerges.
I suggest that Cam and Frog ban all OT posts immediately and that should include drivel about cricket and other so-called sports. However, if when they do this and membership falls off a cliff and all the predicted returnees fail to appear then millertop accepts he was wrong and leaves the site for ever. Fair enough?
