    Anno Domini

The calendar was not invented until the 6th century, so what year did everyone think it was before then?
And how did the maker of the first clock know what time it was?

Julia Cesar used a solar calendar before 0 AD
Judaism...it is around the year 5779
    Muslim year is 1441
Clocks used different times.....but in the day with little travel...it wasn't a big issue.....it only really became an issue of precise measurement when the industrial revolution took hold. Steam travel quickened things up and it only became noticeable the difference in time then.
Einstein, while working in his patent office, dealt with many new time pieces or clocks...as it became important to know what the local time was against the city you may be traveling too...

Calendars have been used way before 0AD

I recall something about issues with the number of days in a year/month though
Most have all related to the moon/stars/sun etc the Egyptians had their calendars thousands of years before 0AD

Whereas time within a day or shorter period of time has been measured by the sun, water, candles, sand etc
