Hi Deeranged.
It should not be.
If things are delivered by Royal Mail there is no surcharge as there is a universal price throughout the UK for delivery. It is thanks to the Co-op stores in remote places and Scottish islands where there is no competition that the Co-operative food retail division is still in business.
Other large retail businesses deliver goods free of charge to Islay providing you order a sufficient amount of goods. I think that you have to spend a minimum of £50 with M & S to have your order delivered free of charge to Islay.

You going back a bit. Nowadays it is called the Royal Mail and we get an excellent service on Islay. The bulk of the mail comes by van on the first ferry sailing of the day (apart from a Sunday) from Kennacraig with some mail arriving on the morning flight from Glasgow.
All mail departing from Islay leaves on the evening flight from Islay Airport to Glasgow Airport providing the pilot can see the runway and the wind is not stronger than 35mph blowing from the south west.
I like to refer to things with their original names islay, Gpo, Dundee hibs, linesman bankers instead of ****ers...you get my drift.😁
Strangely the prevailing westerly wind has an impact on my mail service as well, I know exactly where the elastic bands will have blown to in my garden that have been discarded by the 5th.
Merry Christmas Islay, I thought you were coming back to Dundee ??
The runway at Islay Airport runs in a north west, south easterly direction. If the wind is blowing from the south west stronger than 35mph it is too dangerous to land the plane due to the cross wind.
Alternatively if you are Prince Charles you land your BAE 146 Queens Flight plane down wind in a South westerly gale landing on an old
redundant runway at Islay Airport and end up in the peat bog at the end of this runway causing one million pounds worth of damage to the plane.
That was the end of Prince Charles career as an aircraft pilot.
