    Matty Longstaff's contract

Schlox mentioned this on another thread and I thought it was worth having a discussion about.

Little Longstaff will have the opportunity to talk to European clubs in a few days as his contract expires in the summer.

Naturally, we should have renewed his contract ages ago. So why hasn't this been done? Even Ashely must be able to see the potential to sell an English, young midfielder in a year or so. Very strange.

As a footballer, he seems talented and if he can contribute with 5-6-7 goals during a season, then he's a very valuable asset to us. The fact that he's a Geordie is massive plus as well, but the main thing is that he can actually pass a decent ball and seems to be good at finding and occupying space in the final third.

    Ashley out.

    Aye, it's a worry that he hasn't signed yet....assuming he's been offered one...and assuming it's worth signing.

Aye, those are the two points which are probably at the root of the solution.

I sincerely hope he does sign a new deal. I hope the club and him sort out terms sooner rather than a bit later.
He's one of the brighter prospects for definite, as is his brother, Sean.

    Fingers crossed.

    It's a no-brainer, so that's probably why Ashley / Charnley haven't sealed the deal.

From what i can understand, they felt in the summer there was no need to rush things through because Matty was going to be loaned out and it wasn't believed that much would happen so they could go at leasiure for a new deal and i'd imagine play harder negitionations.

Then he didn't and has been playing first team football, scoring and not looking out of place.

So the original deal has been ripped up and they are doing a new one.

All said and done, **** that he is, Ashley knows the value of a player like Longstaff, in pure monetary terms and i don't think will let that slip through the net.
