So, after all the debating over the last few weeks, Powers goes off, United start to look much more threatening, score and win.
I rest my case M,Lud.
Disagree re Powers. He was very good in the first half apart from a couple of wayward passes (perfectly excusable given the conditions). His job was to sit in front of the back 4 and keep the play moving which he did. If you disagree with me then thats fair enough but go back and watch the first half in full again and tell me im wronghe isnt my favourite player and Harkes/Butcher is 100% our best CM pairing but I'm not going to label him '5hite' as he is far from that.
Powers was playing defensive mid part of the 4-1-4-1 formation which was fine. He played the role well initially. This however, meant Butcher playing a slightly more advanced midfield role which didn't work so well. Naturally Butcher dropping back and Harkes playing the advanced role worked better. Another case of Neilson getting it wrong tbh. Butcher should've started in place of Powers with Harkes taking up Butchers initial role in midfield.
In his positon, yes he is. However they play different roles in the team. Harkes plays his role better than Powers does but the one time we've asked Harkes to be the main holding midfielder (Powers role), it didn't work & we got beat by a part time team. Does this now make Powers the better player? No it doesn't. Different players, different roles.
He just is the better player in my opinion, nothing I have seen changes that, Butcher is a better player than Powers and they are more similar than Harkes/Powers, Butcher should start ahead of him
Harkes is a better player although different styles both are CM's, Stanton was better too.
Powers is ok on the ball but for me, just very slow and doesn't offer much to the team
Just read this comment on the pie and Bovril match thread from during the game from a Montrose fan
"As a complete neutral I’m puzzled what Powers offers to Utd? He’s as slow as wet weekend in Brechin and as far as I can see has no footballing ability whatsoever. Is he having a bad night or is that the norm? "
Now that is what I have seen every time I have saw him in person, unfortunately, and I can't see what improvement he will make at his age, he isn't going to make us a better side, for me he should be a back up
