It was good to see Johnson surrounding himself with experts. Maybe it’s something he could continue with for the next 4ish years. Experts know stuff.

Ok but why would those suicides matter? If there are less suicides than there are deaths from cancer, from flu, from car crashes or any other arbitrary statistic you care to cite, surely that means they are not important?

I'm trying to be provocative but not insensitive. I know the problems caused by the virus are very real and the problems created for posters on this thread sadden me. If it makes any difference to you, I'm under lockdown right now, I've also lost a lucrative contract due to the virus, I am persona non grata at most airports in the world, and can only leave my house to go to the supermarket or the pharmacy. You're also right about the levels of personal debt in the UK although that's a whole other conversation.

This virus is creating chaos because of the potential for damage to everybody if it's not contained. When you see authoritarian regimes like the Chinese government, who are not exactly snowflakes, locking down cities bigger than London and taking a substantial hit to GDP, you know it's serious.

The important bits are "Were the Premier League season not completed, it is likely crisis talks would take place to determine whether previous results would be allowed to stand or whether the entire campaign was rendered null and void.
Any final ruling could depend on how many fixtures had been played, similar to the results of abandoned matches in some sporting competitions being allowed to stand if a certain percentage of them have been completed....... Whatever ruling the Premier League and other governing bodies made, it therefore would be impossible to rule out a legal challenge from any team adversely impacted as a result.

Another potentially awkward scenario would be that some leagues complete and some don't by declaring the season as null and void. What would that mean for the Champions League and Europa competitions? Do Tottenham get another go at the CL? Is this season's CL replayed next? What about teams who do complete and qualify this season? Do they have to wait another year or miss out altogether?
Blimey yes you can see the whole thing going to CAS and rumbling on for years.

This is ever so slightly more than seasonal flu which in its worst years, accounts for 10,000 deaths per year in the UK.

Exactly 100 years after the last pandemic... Spanish Flu, which killed 100 million world wide (mainly young people) here we are again.

Money and monetary loss are nothing to what is going to happen over the next few months.
1% die but 20% need hospitalisation and 5% need intensive care. If they don't get it then they too have a higher risk of death. Google how many intensive care beds we have and you will see why I am advising people to be cautious and keep their distance from others!

Agree, totally... the health service, cannot and will not cope.

Funny story I heard today.. no idea if it’s true or not but it came from one of my customers who is 91 and still very active and healthy.

... Woman in Southwell is diagnosed with Coroner virus this week.... yesterday her husband was shopping in the butchers, bakers and several other shops in Southwell, telling people she had it.

    We’re well beyond containment.

Goes without saying driller, I'll seek and follow any advice given.

The official advice still seems to be 'keep calm, wash your hands, get ready to say goodbye to some eldery loved ones' but I would urge you (and everyone else) to be proactive and start staying at home as much as possible and if you do go out, try and keep your distance from people, even though that isn't the official advice (yet).

I agree with all of that Grantham. I think the fact that it hasn't been made clear to people how serious this is, (or in some cases the seriousness has been deliberately understated for political/financial reasons) is the biggest impediment to stopping the spread.

I can only keep reiterating the facts. Out of 100 cases approximately 5 people need to go to intensive care because their airways and lungs swell up/fill up with liquid. If they are all given access to respirators, on average 4 of them survive and one dies.

If the hospitals run out of intensive care beds and artificial respirators, all five of them choke to death in a corridor and are whisked away to be cremated with no funeral as they are infectious.

China enforced a massive lockdown in the affected areas and built special coronavirus hospitals in a few days. Italy has gone into nationwide lockdown and has the factories making respiratory equipment working 24/7 to increase output by 300%. The countries that have avoided exponential spread enforced social distancing measures very early on.

The UK plan seems to be keep washing your hands and wait until it gets worse, and when it gets worse they still won't react with a lockdown. I hope they're right but if not I hope they've got a great plan B up their sleeve. I would strongly advise people to make some proactive changes to their routines, worst case scenario is that your mates will take the piss when it's all over, on the other hand you might quite literally save a life!

I am not trying to minimise the threat of coronavirus, but I believe there will be people, many already in a desperate situation financially who will either commit suicide or take the law into their own hands, and the government have not taken this into consideration.
