If the result is negative - what then? Told to go home and self-isolate is what.

If your result was positive but later you died from any other illness, as covid19 is now a notifiable disease, you would be classified as having died WITH covid19 even if it wasn't that virus that actually killed you. There is a difference between dying FROM covid19 and dying WITH it. Specialists estimate that fatalities FROM the actual virus are about 12% of the total who have died WITH it.

This brings into perspective the statistics coming from Germany. They are giving their number of deaths FROM covid19 but others including the UK and Italy are giving out numbers of deaths of people WITH it.
It depends on the country in question. I can certainly see from the UK perspective why it is considered less important as you are already staring down the barrel of a gun. Here the isolation measures are not yet as draconian and as such the risk of community transition is high. As a result testing is more important so that community transmission occurs much less. If the UK had got its act together earlier it would need more testing.

This whole testing thingy has me slightly confused as well.

Government advice is STOP AT HOME.......Prince Charles and Boris both tested positive.....advice is STAY AT HOME.....what was the point?

It would make sense if it was solely for NHS staff or supermarket checkout operators, or hospital cleaners only, but spunking away time and effort and money and kits testing Joe Bloggs who recently returned from a Chelters trip, is surely just a waste of time and resources......we could have spent all those resources testing people that are gonna get us through this, and the people doing the testing could be sat in the hospital trying to keep people alive.

Testing everyone is pointless......just tell them all to stay home and shoot them in the kneecaps if they venture outside without a fever and a dry cough.

Vote Tarkers at the next election.....it makes sense.

... think there may be more to the screening hysteria than meets the eye. The Gov set out its priorities - based upon the views of our experts - which have been different to other countries. Interestingly, the UK press, which looks for any negative angle to create attention, has quoted Germany as a role model. However, if we are to believe what we read, they are making a right mess of their testing. Never mind that, it suits the UK press to laud the mighty krauts, so superior in everything they do. Not sure if it's the UK press who have the inferiority complex or Germany which APPEARS to want to be top dog all the time.
Germany, as part of their economic strategy, have a wealth of resources in the pharma sector so are better placed than most countries to carry out testing - but its quantity rather than quality.
Let's not mention the fact that Germany fixed the pricing of the euro to its own advantage, so that economically, the rest of Europe is left trailing ...

Well, it seems that they are a bit quicker at processing test results than we are:

Anyone who doesn't think that the government have made a complete cock-up of testing NHS staff must be blind or stupid.

The Germans have just admitted (according to what I've just been listening to) that the majority of those tested were young, fit and very healthy which means their testing figures give a false impression.

France's death rates were also much lower until this week because they were only registering people who had died from the virus where the virus was the main cause of death, their death figures will now jump up as their true numbers are declared.

This begs the question did France have it right? As has been debated on here already at some length not everyone who dies and tests positive for the virus at time of death have died with the virus as the main cause of death.

On another note S Korea had one of the quickest rising number of covid cases after China but managed to stem the flow very quickly. People will argue this is because they ran an intensive testing program early doors, which they did, however it was easier for them to do this because 60% of the population tested were of a particular religious sect so they had a very positive public response.

The one impressive thing S Korea have done is create a mobile phone app that tells you if anyone testing positive is near you and if so where they have been. This might stop you gpoing to a particular shop for example or change where you choose to do your daily exercise.

I'm just working through some country by country data to see what can be deduced if anything that might suggest who and who hasn't got it right etc when it comes to reacting to the virus.
