Either things genuinely took a sudden turn for the worse this afternoon or the statement from Downing Street last night was misleading. If it's the latter, then I do find it odd in democratic countries that the powers that be are so defensive about acknowledging illness to senior figures or leaders. I know confidence is important, especially for stock markets, but it's not like they were riding high anyway!

I think back years ago (early 90s) to when the senior George Bush was rushed into hospital with a heart issue and was forced the very next day to hang his head out of hospital window shouting "back to work, back to work". That shouldn't be necessary and it probably wasn't helpful for him. In a democratic state important people should be "allowed" to get ill and get treated, because the nature of such countries is that power is not all concentrated in one individual anyway, even if they are the figurehead. There is a chain of command to step in if necessary, be that the Vice President or Foreign Secretary or whoever, so why be so defensive?

In a dictatorship the defensiveness is more understandable, because the power is more concentrated in one individual and there is often a cult of personality built around them being infallible and indestructible, but I think most Western democratic folk understand that their leaders are humans and not Gods.

Correct Jackal, you’d have thought as soon as he had to be admitted the reigns should have officially been handed over.

Then you see that idiot Raab doing the conference and you realise why they didn’t. The Tories are a bit of a one man team.

True, but it seems Dominic Cummings is ok and will carry on running the country.

Well obviously from my political perspective I disagree about the talents of the Tory team, but at least we agree on the broader principle!
