Diction as I know it = A choice and use of words. I was referring to "now we have" altered to "we now have", which incidentally you agree with.

Punctuation - I would not have the comma after "part" but after Mr Serious - as I had not concluded the sentence. You have a full stop, which I disagree with, but in fairness this again is debatable as views by the learned often differ on diction.

Fatboy. The sentence I used in reply to his post was concerning his last sentence - not the topic in hand. It really does seem he has a hatred of Conservatism which is quite child like.

    In answer to your question.

Legacy of Coronavirus? In my opinion time heals everything although it is difficult to forecast in this instance. I would opine this pandemic will be long remembered as much as I can remember the Asian 'flu but now rarely give it much thought. A comparison could be made with WW2, but as said, forecasts can't be made until the virus is considered over and done with and a vaccine or successful medication is proven and I have the utmost confidence this will happen. After this who really knows? We don't .... although I do feel many aspects of life will alter considerably and never go back to where they were. Some changed aspects may even be good, many will need getting used to.

Probably not answered your question Drillo my son ........ just that time will tell the outcome which in turn will form a legacy. Again in time that legacy will be forgotten ........ that's life - and as mine is in it's late years - and I'm fortunate enough to be able to enjoy myself while it lasts, I can only repeat that one day it will be forgotten.

Right ok, in that case it's word order.

I think I'm right in saying you're in your 70s or 80s, getting on, yes, but you could still be around for another two decades! What do you think the good changes might be? And the less good ones?

Some of the points raised so far are pretty interesting IMO. The realisation that we don't need to change city or country in order to have a meeting may actually cut pollution while saving time and money.

The idea that giant firms like Amazon will take over is a real worry. Am I being too optimistic thinking that the opposite could happen? That this virus could nudge small businesses into using internet/ phone orders for local customers? It's already happening where I am - you can get a vacuum packed aperitif from the bar on your street delivered to your house, complete with a compartment for the olive on a stick! You can phone the garden centre and get them to deliver your plant pots and flowers, and so on.

You are correct Driller, born July 1938 and consider myself extremely lucky to have firstly been born an Englishman and also when it was easier to climb the social and career ladder than it is today. On your details, why 'Driller'? Derived from being a farmer drilling the land/ Oil rig driller/Sergeant Major ()/Drill operator? Just curious, it's a trait of the oldsters!

Only an aside so we move on after the waffle.

    1. Technology constantly moves on. This is a proven fact as I have certainly seen over the years and to list opinions on the 'fors' and 'againsts' is a very profound question. Two very basic examples would be the advance of the personal knowledge and equipment used by the medical profession and long may it continue. Another could be electronics and all it's various arms, which of course includes communications as we know them today, but these and many other technologies would advance irrespective of the current situation and wouldn't form part of the equation. You correctly mention on line retailing which has been around for a while and I see it continuing more so, again irrespective of the situation. Amazon need to pay full taxes on their profits and as they expand as a service then in theory their profits rise and likewise pay more into the coffers. I well remember a very different Nottingham of say the 50's as opposed to the Nottingham of today. There were the smaller shops around town that catered for most things, but in those days you could park your car in Slab Square as car ownership was much less then. So having private transport has created problems! GEM superstore (Asda) opened on Loughborough Road and was the city's first superstore and the public (now with more cars) found it was easier to park and buy cheaper, which obvious hit the smaller independents. Cultures have altered so much and Nottingham as one of the country's biggest industrial cities is no more. All to do with supply and demand, but this trend will continue.

    2. To sum up ( my opinions only).

Lessons for the better will be learned from this situation as they always are after a crisis.

An awful lot will depend on how the government handles the situation. Forgetting the sniping from both sides, I think that in general the public think the government are doing as good a job as they can and I also think the Labour party aren't doing too bad either in opposition ie being very fair. Could it be that the two main parties will actually work more in harmony in the future, give and take on both sides? Brexit will definitely go ahead on time without extension and I really think it will be on WTO terms. I believe trade talks between us and the States begin this Wednesday in earnest with a view to getting a deal done this year (It will help Donald) and the Dem's want a deal as well, especially now where all countries want the best for themselves. So I can see ( forget Trump) us forging closer relationships with the US and the rest of our Commonwealth. So as mentioned earlier Driller, some possible good things, some possibly bad.

    Positives:

    1. A few more people will realise that cooking at home is more enjoyable, healthier and cheaper than ringing up for a takeaway.
    2. A few more people will realise that growing your own vegetables is more enjoyable, healthier and cheaper than buying from the supermarket.
    3. A few more people will realise that going for a family countryside walk is more fun, healthier and cheaper than paying loads for a theme park.

    Negatives:

    1. An awful lot of people will have died before their time.
    2. The government repeatedly talking on a daily basis about "our brilliant / fantastic / superb / incredible / amazing / heroic / wonderful / terrific NHS staff" will prove no more than empty words. Despite our Prime Minister having first-hand experience, once this is all over them and the organisation they work for will be treated as low priority compared to the government's wealthy backers.
    3. Notts will be denied the promotion they were heading for.

    positives;-
    1) some people might actually learn to cook (probably wishful thinking)
    2) ban on new petrol cars will probably be brought forward to 2030 once people see how bad the air in cities gets again as soon as everyone goes back to work (should happen - but probably won't)
    3) Foreign holidays will become dearer and people will spend more holidays in the UK (probably wishful thinking)
    4) 48 years of hurt might have finally ended...

    negatives;-
    1) The blame game... America knows as much about what's going on as China - and possibly always has...
    2) The world has far too many stupid people in it.... the whole virus thing has proved we are heading towards the film "Idiocracy" - but for real (in the States)
    3) Some lower league and grass roots clubs might now survive (don't care too much about certain PL ones....)
    4) As Elite_Pie said - "An awful lot of people will have died before their time." - my next door neighbour - a retired paramedic is one of them...

What needs to happen - but probably won't - all key workers who worked through this should get a financial reward - why should those who were furloughed get up to £2000 for doing nothing - when key workers a lot of who are on minimum wage put their lives at risk and will get their usual wage which in many cases will be lucky to be over £1000-£1300 after tax.

Don't drink in Wetherspoon anymore as the millionaire owner clearly does not care about his staff.

How others see us. Somewhat different to the glorified cheerleading squad the UK press has largely become.

... as opposed to the absolute hysteria that would have occured if we had gone for total lock down. The freedom mob would have called for government resignation and a General Election. We're too nice in the UK and want the best of all options ... the price is now 28k and growing - your choice UK people ...
