Having a bit of time on my hands at the moment was having a wander around this morning cutting through Barnhill cemetery.
Got into a conversation with an older lady who mentioned it was the birthday of her late husband and she was going to his grave. She mentioned he was a footballer in his time. Obviously I enquired who?
Ian Mitchell she says. United's Ian Mitchell I ask. Yes she says. She then has a blether about his career.. Youngest player at time to play for us. His move to Newcastle. I told her I'd seen him play towards the end of his career. She spoke well about the players of the 60's and of Jerry Kerr.
Of course it then dawned on me Ian would have played against Barcelona..
" son she says he Scored against Barcelona"............ I had forgotten to be fair.
Ian died sadly at 49 twenty years ago. Her family were going to the graveside with her later in the day. Hopefully they had a peaceful time.

Great story. Ian scored for United in the first match I ever saw. It was a rainswept evening derby at Dens around '63. My old man had promised to take me. It hammered down all day and I remember looking out of the classroom window a lot wondering if the game would be on. It was and United won.
Ian was a great player, replaced by Kenny Cameron when he went south to Newcastle I think.
