I don't see how erasing history helps at all. Colston had been doing good things. His statue was there for the good things he did. Are we near to saying that because Floyd had done some bad things he deserved to be mistreated in the same way as the statue (and all its surrounding area too?) should be mistreated? Dangerous ground and dangerous to try and impose our morals on a different era.

Better that the statue had a better explanation and a reason for the City of Bristol to want it to be shown else we'll end up burning all the books too. Now when was it that happened?
I don't understand where your mind is here Oldpie. You're comparing the 'mistreatment' of a live human being to that of a statue to start with. As BFP says your comparisons are off the scale.

To be clear no-one is saying we need to erase history. But I think it's time to get rid of the art on our street on public streets that glorifies the really nasty parts of British colonial history. It looks like Edward Colston's business was responsible for enslaving and shipping over 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the UK. You might be prepared to overlook that because of the 'good things he did'. But I find that train of thought unacceptable and can't imagine anything good he could do that would overcome what he did to those 80,000 people and their families descendents.

Honestly what you're saying it's not a million miles away from saying they shouldn't have taken down the Jimmy Saville statues and plaques in Glasgow and Scarborough because he did a lot for charity too.

Plenty of examples of riots and protest going back hundreds of years, usually ending with the king caving in then when it calms down the ring leaders heads roll.
This whole situation is in danger of getting out of hand.

Your comment was pretty pointless then wasn’t it?

It’s not completely unknown for authorities to insert their own troublemakers into demonstrations and protests in order to discredit the protest. Agents Provocateurs I believe they’re called. I’m sure the honest lads in charge of our government would never do that though.

Let's face it most comments on here are pretty pointless, the conspiracy theory that you have just made is one. Sounds like you are getting a bit desperate.

A reporter (sub-continent looking but an Aussie, and pointing out that he was a person of colour) was in Melbourne interviewing many different people about the reasons they were attending the protests. Many of them clearly parroting what they had read or been told or seen on the mainstream news, and when the questioning got a little too difficult, they simply walked away saying that they'd been told not to talk to the media. Not a lot had a real grasp of it all; many were the rent a crowd type.....go along and make some noise about something you don't really understand.

It’s not really a conspiracy theory when the practice has been used many regimes in many countries all over the world. It’s an obvious tactic for any government wishing to distract or discredit their opponents.

Especially when it is a government you hate and blame for everything.
Anyway this is pointless (a bit like this thread has become) I am off for my daily walk.
