A bit of a random one but what about Nigel Clough? No real substance behind me saying this apart from just interest in what others think? Just left Burton in the summer. Would he be interested in moving up here? I've never been a massive fan of hiring a manager that doesnt have any knowledge of the Scottish game. But one to think about nonetheless.
Pile it on Chesney from over the road
This will be Asghar's biggest test so for, the whole sporting director model is aimed at making managerial transitions less chaotic and avoiding wholesale restructuring every time there is a new manager. Ideally i think United would be looking for a forward thinking young coach, bit like signing an untapped up and coming player with exciting potential, someone whose managerial protectory is going to be on an upward curve, unlike the usual suspects.
Whether that is practical just now or the club is in a strong enough position to take that kind of gamble on potential at the moment in time is questionable. Of the candidates mentioned I cant see the Motherwell manager wanting the post, Tommy Wright is miserable sod, his teams tend to reflect that, but that might just be what United need for the next couple of seasons at least to establish themselves back in SPL. Levein came to United with a similar reputation, and whilst he toughened up the defence, he also built and expansive, exciting squad and was forward thinking, maybe we just got him at his peak and the best time, i.e. he had built up experience as a manager but was still fresh to new ideas etc... Maybe Wright has had his peak years, plus he seems very much his own man, would he be open to working with a sporting director? He'd be my choice if we are just looking at the regular candidates that get banded about, free too, but I think he might be wanting a break from Sco football and looking at the N Ireland job anyway.
Would guys like Wright or Levein work with Asghar? There type of managers like to be their own man own and have very strong personalities. I'm not so sure they would.
Reports in the press of Neilson becoming 'increasingly frustrated' at Utd over the last coming weeks. Why?

Not wanting Levein back he's had his time. Wright would be my choice and like the idea of Daly in as coach. Gary Holt might also be an option. Done really well at Livi.
I can never make my mind up about this but it's pretty unusual in any sizeable football club that the manager would have control of the transfer budget. United have moved this way since Asghar's appointment and, in situations like this, it does protect the club somewhat.
