Ps. Mods, any chance we can close this thread and start a new welcome one to the new manager instead? Cheers!

I will of course give the new manager my full support as usual.
i dont think Jim McLean was the outstanding candidate all those years ago either; look what he did and wit a few sticky moments along the way. Welcome Micky Mellon and very best of luck!

Like those who were unhappy over appointing Mackay for all the reasons they listed, GB, myself (and I suspect many, many Arabs) are equally entitled to feel disappointed in his failure to be appointed and are also entitled to express that. I’ll not go over all the old polarising ground again other than to say that regretfully from my perspective, although I more than welcome Micky to the Club, in a lot of supporters’ eyes he’s under the microscope from the word go because if this goes tits up, splits between fans may well become apparent as they question why Mackay didn’t get the gig. I very, very much hope this doesn’t come to pass as if Micky is successful then therefore so is the Club and I’ll be a happy man. I do however feel that Malky is going to remain the elephant in the room for some time and you can’t expect fans to just ‘forget’ that overnight. Only consistent results on the park are going to do that.

Has anyone stopped to think that Micky might've just been 'the best man for the job'? He may have came across the best in his interview. The most enthusiastic. The one who Asghar thought he could work best with and who Ogren had that gut feeling about. The one who had a genuine passion for youth development and a proven track record of bringing in players and selling for profit. The one who was willing to buy into the structure and the culture of Dundee Utd Football Club and commit everything he had to be here. He seems an honest, genuine, down to earth, likeable guy. He's a winner, with a good, recent track record including some incredible cup runs and comes highly recommended by almost every single person he's worked with in football.

Very possibly and as I said I very much hope he now goes on to justify the faith that has now been placed in him. But, a few days ago Big Tone said in an interview that the right candidate had to be right for the Club, the players and ‘the fans’, or words to that effect. It was strongly suggestive that that was the reason Mackay had been set aside. There’s no smoke without fire and I highly suspect that Malky was set to be the next manager of Dundee United before the email ‘Voices Of Concern’ were submitted.

Gunboat and a few others called out the Snake several years ago, well before the ultimate relegation and were shot down at the time but as we all know they proved to be correct as we subsequently found out about, what with deceiving fans groups with ‘I won’t sell’ texts, leaking JMac’s contract details, trying to extract his ‘inheritance’ back out of the Club, ‘Mr A’, etc etc etc. That was highly divisive at the time as many of us stuck with ST (and I count myself in that) until it all came out in the wash and by then of course, it was far, far too late. So basically the lesson to be learnt is that if guys have doubts, don’t brush them off dismissively- they are Arabs too y’know and equally want the best for their Club and if they have genuine worries are perfectly entitled to express them. I for one wish many more of us had opened our eyes to Mr Thompson much, much earlier.

No ones being brushed off, certainly not by me. If anyone's being brushed off it's the poor guy who's just been appointed our manager just because his last team were relegated.

Just what exactly are Mackays credentials? A promotion to the Premiership with an overspending Cardiff team 8 years ago? He spunked £50m to try & keep them up. He broke his club record fee to sign a player for £12m who flopped and was released after six months? He was sacked and moved to Wigan where he won five games out of a possible twenty five and relegated them two years after being in The Premiership.

There's pros and cons for both candidates, but I'm not sure the clamour for Malky is justified tbh.

And I can't see any interview with Asghar where, in relation to Mackay, he states he wants the candidate to be right for the fans? It was th Tommy Wright interview where he mentioned this.

I like this tweet (as we seem to be talking about racism a lot)

    Things that won't end racism:

    - calling everybody 'racist'
    - calling yourself 'anti-racist' whilst being racist
    - posting a black square
    - pulling down statues
    - defunding the police
    - hashtags

    Things that will:

    - not judging or mistreating people based on their skin colour

"There's no real rush," added Asghar, who is hopeful of making an appointment early next week. "It has to be the right fit for the players, the fans and the club.

In the interview, he’d actually moved on from talking about TW and was by that point talking about the managerial appointment in general. We are where we are now - we can all quote this stat and that stat but the bottom line is that some supporters are now entrenched in their respective positions over who should have been manager and that is not going to change. Not yet anyway and on the Mackay side, those of us who wanted him feel he wasn’t appointed due to reasons other than footballing ability. GB and others were proven to be correct about the Snake so I would respect their opinions but in this case I hope they (and myself) are proven wrong. And I really mean that - I would take no great pleasure in having to say ‘I told you so’ in times ahead. I want Micky to prove me wrong.
