    Grealish called up at last

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish has been called up to the England senior squad for the first time.

However, Marcus Rashford and Harry Winks have pulled out of Gareth Southgate's squad for the Nations League fixtures in Iceland and Denmark.

Grealish, 24, has previously represented England at Under-21 level and was a member of Southgate's 2016 Toulon Tournament-winning squad.

It follows call-ups for Conor Coady and Ainsley Maitland-Niles on Saturday.

Following his withdrawal, Manchester United forward Rashford tweeted: "Gutted. Never want to let this team down but these fixtures just came a little too soon for me.

"I tried my best but I have to focus on starting the season at my strongest for club and country. Good luck boys, I'll be cheering you on from home."

England's players met up at St George's Park on Monday.

Southgate's side face their Euro 2016 conquerors Iceland in Reykjavik on 5 September before playing Denmark in Copenhagen three days later.

The disruption caused to the football calendar by coronavirus, including Euro 2020 being delayed by a year until 2021, means England have not played since November 2019, when a 4-0 win in Kosovo concluded their Euro 2020 qualification campaign.

    England squad
Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Eric Dier, Joe Gomez, Michael Keane, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Tyrone Mings, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker

About time too. I rarely disagree with Graeme Souness' opinions on footballers, but I do with regard to Jack Grealish. I think he's certainly worthy of an international call-up, and I think he would quickly become a key player for any 'top six' side who took a punt on signing him. In fact, I think if he was surrounded by more quality than he is at Villa, you would see his game go up another level.

My concern about that squad would be a lack of true ball-winners in midfield. You've got to win the midfield battle before your quality players can shine.

Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice can put a foot in, Mount isn't to bad either. Spain in 2008-2012 had a midfield 3 of Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta. Now i'm not saying we have that attacking flair, but this England side has been assembled to dominate the ball, not spend 90 mins running to tackle. In my personal opinion the area of concern is CB, not the midfield.

What I would give for 2 or 3 of those players in the Rep of Ireland squad

As a footballer, Grealish is well worth his place in the England team. As a man, you have to question the suitability of his temperament.

He was the most fouled player in the PL last season, captained his team to another season in the top flight, no sending off's and 8 cautions which is probably about average for a midfielder in that league. I'm not sure his temperament should come into question. Maybe you're referring to him doing a couple of laddish things when he was still let's say a lad?

Maybe he was still a lad in March when he breached lockdown, crashed his car and fled the scene.
