If shanks is staying we have appere and Clark that can play with him.

Pawlett plays there too though I don’t rate him

It’s probably Mcmullan’s best position to play along with or behind striker

Behind him there is Smith, Glass both in that position

That’s 6 players to cover one position at centre attacking mid or playing off the striker

On the wings we have Bolton, sporle or chalmers , push Robson or L Smith forward

Mcmullan can play there too but after that it can be square pegs in round holes

Feel our pace is lacking and need more wide attacking options.

Yes we have a lot of players, but we dont have enough quality is my point. Quantity is fine for injury cover but not for the starting 11.

I think some folk are forgetting what we were like before Butcher came back into our midfield.

I like harkes, he can be frustrating however in our best games he’s often been one of our top three players. He’s had to shift role frequently and has adapted well, albeit a couple of goals would tip him forwards, literally

Butcher is still work in progress, nonetheless he has played a huge part in getting us to were we are now, IMHO his best years in this league are still to come: Dillon showed how attitude and application can add a level of performance and my money is on Butcher doing the same. Like Davie Bowman hope to see him around Tannadice for years to come.
Butcher a work in progress? He's 29 and is one of the most experienced players at the club. He simply doesn't have the ability to boss things like he did last season. I was vocal about this last season and he's proving me right so far. The fact he was such an important player for us last season only goes to show how poor we are in that area of the park.

And Harkes, another one I was vocal about. Unlike Butcher, he has time on his side to improve. If either of them are a work in progress it's him given his age and background. No idea where you get the opinion of him changing position frequently from? Other than what, two maybe three games under Neilson, he's been an ever present as one of the two central midfielders. He needs to add more to his game and be a far bigger influence than he currently is. Running about a lot looking busy doesnae cut it for me. He's had a one or two good moments this season, showing he actually has that vision and ability to play the killer pass but they are too few & far between for me.

Perhaps, though I think you are being unnecessarily harsh

I see enough from them both to persuade me they have more to offer at this level

Later this season we'll really know ;-)

A young Gordon Petric or Billy McKinlay transfer would be good just now though

Unfortunately we don't have the Delorian Shanks to get us to where we need to go, we do have Biff Butcher who thinks intimidating and being aggressive is the key and Marty Pawlett who buzzes around trying to make things happen but invariably gets distracted.
We need Great Scot Doc McLean to call and advise his younger counterpart Mellon how to invent a midfield that works.

I'd even take Biff Tannen at centre half!
