Whatever Happened To The Novelty Record?

I watch a lot of old Top Of The Pops from the 70’s and early 80’s.

There were forever novelty records throughout my childhood and ****s and even into the 90’s with stuff like the classic from Chubawumba.

Here’s one from 1980 by BA Robertson.

I’m sure I bought this one and “Bang,Bang”.

What an absolute load of s**t. The guitars aren’t even plugged in! Those old TOTP episodes just bring back memories of all the garbage that was classed as ‘music’. I suppose today’s equivalent is ‘rap’, which isn’t, by any stretch of imagination, music, total garbage. All rap is cr@p.

Glad to be a master at something!

Novelty records? There would be case for classing most current pop ‘music’ as novelty, not much substance to it. I was most fortunate in growing up so much great, innovative music was being created; in my opinion there has never been a time to rival the 60’s and 70’s for music. There was some rubbish about then, too, but so much great stuff, great bands and singers, unrivalled since then. Of course, there are a few exceptions that prove the rule, Oasis, for example.

Mick you've just taken me back in time - Bang Bang was the first song playing on the radio when my late mom bought a radio cassette player.

I was going through some old stuff in the loft recently and came across a box with old records in it. A lot of good stuff to bring back memories and some very questionable stuff too. Relations used to give me records for Xmas and birthdays, mostly ones that I didn’t particularly like. There were a few ‘novelty’ records amongst them, one of which was a waste of vinyl called Mr Custer, by Charlie Drake; no further comment required in respect of that!
