My first headmistress at infants had the wonderful name of Miss Caine.
Not long after i started the teacher went out of the class and I jumped on the desk and sang Rawhide to the class.
Unbeknown to me Miss Caine was watching through the window.
She came in and said, Desmond, you were standing on that table singing Rawhide. I said I wasn't, she said she saw me.
I said it was not that table but the one over there. She told my mom she had to turn her back to stop the children see her smiling.
She never punished me because she said i was honest. I had to walk a mile to junior and infant school, she had a little Austin and she would stop and give me a lift. I used to make sure nobody saw me getting in, i didn't want them thinking i was a teacher's pet.
Year's later when I was married with kids she met my mom in town and asked how i was.

I got the cain, metre rule, slipper and even a walking stick across my backside at primary school.

Our headmaster was the first black head teacher in England. Little fella called Mr O'Connor who served in the RAF during the second world war as a Commonwealth subject and settled down over here.

He used to say 'this is going to hurt me a lot more than it will hurt you boy' whenever he cained you, before jumping into the air and letting out a little scream as the cain came down. The other examples of correction were from class teachers and weren't always called for.

Funnily enough I really liked Mr O'Connor and I can say with all honesty that he only cained me unfairly the once. I probably 'deserved' the rest by the standards of the day.

At secondary school it was the cain, a slipper, a trainer, an open hand on several occasions and I also copped it in the face with a flying board rubber more than once too.

I can say in all truth that there was no need for any of the ones at secondary school. I haven't always had the best of relationships with authority figures.

As such joining the army probably wasn't the best bit of joined up thinking I've ever done but hey ho, what's gone is gone 😊 .

I remember in English class, this teacher, I won't name him but any former pupil of Handsworth Technical School For Boys would know who I am on about, reading to the class but clocking a pupil whispering to the kid next to him. The teacher carried on reading as if nothing was wrong and slowly walked up behind the talking kid. Without stopping reading he shoved the kids head down so hard smashing his face into the desk then promptly started to berate him and slap him about the face and head for having the audacity to talk while he is talking. The teacher was absolutely out of control. His hair had fallen forward like Hitler and spit was flying everywhere in his anger. As for me and the rest of the class we were just so glad it was not us, but no-one talked in his class again.

I never said I was an angel Mick.🙂

At senior school we had a metalwork teacher
Mr Jackson, who used to work at Stewart's and Lloyds.
The school had an underground where we used to go for a smoke in our break.
Mr Jackson used to come down and say that Mr Bentley, the head, had sent him to see if anyone was smoking, we used to give him a cigarette and we talked about football. He was an Albion fan. He would tell Bentley that nobody had been smoking lol.
Mr Bentley took over from Mrs Michael who looked like Alistair Sim out of the St Trinian films, glasses on beads, two piece suits and hair dyed pink and green. She was sacked after she went to Coseley carnival and ran off with the takings.
We really didn't have much chance did we?😂

I had a French teacher who slapped me round the chops for whistling in class, but it wasn't me who was whistling. I had the red mark on me face for days it day arf sting.

I also had an English teacher called Mr Ship and I would always call him Mr sh1t he'd had enough of my saying this that he gave me a note to take to the headmaster for the cane. I took the note but didn't visit the head and nothing was said.

Did all this punishment do us any harm? nah.

I was incarcerated in a boarding school until I was 16, canings were commonplace but usually administered after evening assembly which, if you knew that you were in for it, gave you time to ‘pad up’; swimming trunks (preferably slightly damp) with a couple of pairs of rugby shorts on top. Trousers were quite baggy so there was room for stuff underneath! My first housemaster at that school was banned from caning for a couple of years for lacerating a boy’s backside; after the ban he was only allowed to give two strokes! Incredible. The best course of action, though, was to not get caught in the first place, I became quite adept at that!
