    Coping in these trying times

    How's everyone doing?
I have just heard on the radio that people over fifty are drinking more alcohol than ever since the lockdown.
I am the opposite, i haven't had a drink of any alcohol at all for over two weeks, just drinking tea, coffee, Vimto and Pepsi.
I used to go around the local which I can see from our front room, but even then i only had about three real ales a night, four if I pushed the boat out, and i only went around three or four times a week.
The lockdown doesn't really affect us, we are mid sixties, live in a nice rural location, have access to walks etc.
I do feel for young people who have had their social and love lives put on hold.
I'm not sure i could have coped if i was young.

Relate to all that except for the fizzy drinks.

I'm off the alcohol never drunk too much in the house anyway. Similar nights out at the local. We are missing eating out, trying to compensate by at least once a week cooking a special meal we haven't tried before.

I'm following a training plan to go from 10k to half marathon in 12 weeks. Use Zoom to quiz once week and Book Club once a month. This week 10 of us are having a Zoom dinner party (sounds a bit desperate to me) but having seen the wife's menu I'm all for it. There's a shellfish starter and that will make a bottle of dry white very tempting.

I too am coping easily but feel very sorry for the kids both in work and play. As a young man how good would I have been at following the rules?

This lockdown is a real drag but fortunately I have easy access from my village to fields and footpaths for daily dog walking. I also try to play some music but it’s not like playing in a group with others. I have learned to play the bass guitar, though! My music group have a weekly quiz type zoom meeting; I ran it today with a load of old 78 and 45 rpm records. Of course, there’s always Tesco to go to..........

”As a young man how good would I have been at following the rules?”

A very good question. That is really something worth while thinking about, brave and gives perspective - like it. 😊

Talking about perspective, maybe some here were young during the 80s (I was) when there was another pandemic of another kind going around, well still is to be honest, some 35-37 million dead so far I believe.

HIV/AIDS of course, and in the 80s that was a death sentence if you got it. And you didn’t have to belong to any vulnerable group at all, you could be a 25-year-old, fit as a fiddle, still, in some years, a death sentence.

The majority in the western world who got it were homo***uals and drug addicts, but many others too got it. You just had to have unsafe *** with ”the wrong person”, who had had it with the wrong person, and then you... And, you did not need to have ***, some needed blood transfusions to survive, and got contaminated blood, and were scr**ed.

Unsafe *** in the 80s anyone?

Anyone wanting to do a Zoom music quiz I would recommend downloading audacity

    www.audacityteam.org/download

So simple to download tracks onto it and then edit so you just get intros for example. Even I can use it.

Evening Swedish. Loved the 80’s and was a holiday rep in Fuerteventura, Tenerife and Majorca and every night was Saturday night. Met lots of Scandanavians and they were really up for a good time. I have worked for a few travel companies overseas - remember Intasun and was a resort manager for Horizon Holidays who were based at Broadway in Five Ways. Almost cried when Horizon were taken over as they were a brilliant company. Horizon had a fab airline too called Orion Airways so lots of their staff stayed over in resort with flight delays.

Those were the days Swedish. I remember lots of travel reps from a company called Spies - they had then a gorgeous purple uniform!

I never used contraception at all in the 70’s or 80’s until one night when it was demanded on a first s h a g occasion.

A spectacular failure as I tried to put it on inside out⚰️😫

I found it to be like wearing a sock and it killed the passion for me, the sight of a Jonny makes me as flaccid as an Alan Irvine team talk.

Considering the reasonable number of women who succumbed to my charms it’s a miracle I never caught VD or AIDS I guess.

    As for the lockdown period.

    Thankfully absolutely no s e x !

Hello Des', we're pretty much ok in truth.

My lad's been spending a lot of time gaming online between temp jobs and w@nking himself into a frenzied stupor (probably) in his room. Honestly, I'm half expecting a scene from a nature programme like when the frogs mate in the trees. Only instead of spawn and foam everywhere there'd be a rolling cascade of his bodily fluids cuming down the stairs so to speak.

The Mrs is ticking along nicely but she misses her dad who lives in Devon. Thankfully she managed to spend a weekend down there when the last lot of restrictions were lifted, but other than that she hasn't seen him since either February or March. She wasn't very well for most of the first lockdown but at least she's been ok during this one so all's well.

As for myself I still appreciate a beer and occuppied most of my spare time during lockdown part one with lots of exercise. Unfortunately I've recently worn out my third rowing machine in four years which is a bit of a blow. As is my second knee strain in four weeks. I was on crutches for seven months last year because of a year long injury to my other leg which vexed me no end. I'm keeping on top of things exercise wise where I can and staying focused though.

Anyway Des', all of the very best to you and yours, Dan' .

    I envy your lad 68.

    Sounds like heaven to me.
