the issue as I see it was that Mac was a good coach, tactically and in terms of handling the players on the training ground etc

As he moved up the "intellectual spectrum" this is when his limitations became more clear - transfers were not that great and it seemed to me that he was the perfect "peter principal" candidate. The higher he got the less effective he became. So now, at board level advisory, he is potentially above his comfort level and equally further away from what he does best.

He would have been a great assistant manager / head coach, but not so sure about this
