Thread: Croatia anyone?

  1. #1

    Question Croatia anyone?

Neither me nor the Child Bride have ever been to Croatia, any tips or advice anyone?

April seems about right with the corona travel timetable hopefully resolved.

Went twice years ago when it was still part of Yugoslavia, beautiful country, absolutely loved it, including Dubrovnik. Called in at Dubrovnik off a cruise ship a couple of years ago, there were a couple of other cruise ships moored up, Dubrovnik was thronged, worse than Venice, couldn't get back on the boat quickly enough.

I'd recommend Croatia, but I'd steer clear of Dubrovnik, there's plenty of other places better to stay imo, unless you love crowds of course. Although I believe once the tourists get back on their boats Dubrovnik is idyllic once more, but how frequently the ships call and how long the tourists are ashore I don't know.

We went to Dubrovnik for a long weekend 20 years ago not long after the war. Stayed at the Hilton just outside the City walls. Fascinating place with its of history if that’s what you want. We enjoyed wandering around and the City walls walk is a must. The beach is a long walk bus ride away if you’re a beach bum. More hotels there well away from cruise ship folk. Also been three times more recently on cruise day or half day trips, lots of cafes and restaurants. Cruisers tend not to spend much said the locals. Doubt there’ll be many cruise ships there then so might be a good time to go.

I have been to Split and Dubrovnik on a few occasions and agree with the comments above when a cruise ship or two is in port in Dubrovnik.
Split is quite a bit quieter, although it is several years since I was last there and we had our son and the grandchildren with us.

My mate in Leeds says Makarska is the place to spend a week, but to hire a car for the perfect break.

I told him Bamford is a cheating tw@t, but thanked him very much for the advice.

Just found a deal that looks perfect, just persuading the Child Bride to get on board.

Me and the boss have been to Croatia a couple of times. Dubrovnik is a beautiful place, always busy but worth looking at.Also has a cable car which has stunning views at the top. We’ve also been to Split. Again very busy , look out for Hadjuk Splits stadium on the edge of town, if you get there. Marvellous Roman ruins on the edge of the city. Definitely worth visiting, a lot to see if you are in the area. Can very much recommend the coastal village of Hvar. Playground for film stars such as Tom Cruise.Very picturesque with a lovely waterfront. We were told it’s the sort of area which hasn’t taken off yet, but is already been compared with the likes of St. Tropez. Finally, a gorgeous little village called Starigrad, a miniature Venice, but again beautiful. When we’ve been there ,the weather has been very warm , the sea bright blue ,and not a cloud in the sky.
Go there asap, you won’t regret it for sure.
