    Height

It's always deceptive when you see footballers on the pitch and then see them in real life, they somehow look bigger on the pitch.
I remember seeing Bomber in Halfords Lane and was at how small and skinny he looked.
Jeff Astle everyone assumed was tall because he was so good in the air, but he was 5' 11." Chris Brunt is 6' 1".
Brunt is the same height as I used to be and I am now as tall as Astle in his prime.
When I was 21, I was considered tall, but many youngsters are taller than that today.
My two sons are 6'1" and 6'2" and I look a little old man next to them.
I have a cousin who is 6', and one of her brothers is 6'5".
I wonder if there is a limit to how tall humans will grow.

I too always thought of a Jeff as a giant, just because when I were a kid of 7 I stood outside the players entrance at Halfords Lane to get his autograph. He seemed to tower over me as he signed my autograph book. I was craning my neck to look at him. Therefore I must have been very flippin tiny

I’m 5’9” but I was always good in the air, I was better with my head than with my feet when it came to finishing.

    My wife is around 5’7”.

Our two daughters are both quite diminutive at around 5’4 at best I’d guess albeit the eldest is by my wife’s first husband but he was taller than me I believe ( the wife said he was much bigger but not as much fun, I presume she was referring to height! )

Our son is 6’4” and was taller than me at the age of 11-12 and 6’ 0” by the time he was 13 and hit 6’4” by the time he was 14-15.

We only have one other tall family member going back in history and that’s my dad’s cousin who’s around the height of my son.

There’s no rhyme or reason to this stuff.

My son was also c r a p in the air which was a real frustration for me but much better with his feet.

It’s always frustrated me when naturally tall players can’t be a r s e d to jump for a ball properly.

I think George Riley was the worst of the worst in this regard when he played for us.

No wonder he had his ear bitten off when he retired.......probably a disgruntled Albion fan!

There’s my point, still too lazy to get his head out of the way even when someone wants to make lunch out of a body part😫

I was stood next to Cyrille Regis in a Coventry Night Club. Surprised how big he didn't look.

I'm 5'10". Both my boys are taller than me and both much better footballers than me even though their mother is only 5'4" and and is rubbish at sport. Our daughter is 5'6" and used to play tennis to county standard.

I think our eldest and girl are very much a chip of the old block in so many ways and the youngest is chalk and cheese in so many ways. But all good kids.

The thing with Jeff was he was spring heeled and could out jump all the centre backs of the day, he used to run riot against Manchester United and West Ham.
Billy Wright of Wolves wasn't tall for a centre back and neither was Bobby Moore. It was all about timing and anticipation with those two, they could read the game.

I noticed the same regarding Cyrille. He was standing in his civies in the tunnel at the Hawthorns and I was surprised that he didn't look taller. On the field, he looked immense.
On average, youngsters today are much bigger than our generation. When I was a youngster I was 5'10", as was my father, but both of my sons are 6'2". Their mum is about average for a woman.

    I am 6.06955381 feet obviously.... 😳 185 cm that is! 😎

A footballer in the local club a couple of years ago was 6 feet 7 59/64 inches... Yet again, please go metric, he was 203 cm (two cm taller than Peter Crouch). 😎

When asked about weaker sides he replied ”aerial play” and he wanted to play as a winger. 😂

I was no great shakes in the air when I played up front only ever remember scoring with 1 header (but it was from 18 yards) Finished playing CH when I did win my fair share.

Love it when a little un scores with his head. Kevin Keegan springs to mind for his ability to jump and Michael Owen for being in the right place. Saw his stats and I think he scored more than 40 headers for clubs and country.

Any diminutive Albion players with the knack?

    David Speedie? Any more?

When I was growing up bloke in our street won a prize as 'the Tallest Man in West Bromwich' He was like a fairy on a gob of lard on a football pitch but quite a useful fast bowler.

His prize was an extra long bed.

Diet has a lot to play in height, protein in particular, I was reading a book the other day and was surprised to find out that back in the Middle Ages the sons of nobility were often 6footers which considering the rest of the population wasn’t much over 5ft was put down to their diet being far richer in protein than the average peasant, also the physical training they had and quality armour made them almost invincible on the battle field.
