I was in my first year in college at Cheltenham during that winter. I struggled back from Stafford just after Christmas and the snow was so deep, some days we had to dig ourselves out of the Hostel door. At the beginning of March you could not see the fences on the Racecourse, and the festival was only two weeks away. However, there was a thaw and the meeting went ahead.

There was virtually no sport, and at college the only competitive outdoor activity was cross country running.. Plenty of sledging was done on the nearby Cleeve Hill, that over looks the Racecourse. The common room tubular chairs were great for that activity.

We still went to school in short trousers school pullover and blazzer cap and wellies in our day. Our long socks used to roll down and we’d get chaffed at the back of our legs. We also wore woollen hand knitted gloves and balaclavas which used to get damp and soggy. Top coat was as duffel if you could afford one. Also a useless leather bag called a Satchell our fingers too cold to open the buckles! In 63 there was trenches made along the paths which were almost as tall as me. Milk was always frozen on the doorsteps.
Im sure i could go on and on ..... Life sure goes quick

Hard times ,but happy times. No computer games, black and white TV that you had to give a bang on the top and only 2 channels but we made our own fun.

Comparing society today to my schooldays
In Junior school we were very disciplined. But there was no real cynicism between us all. Sure the odd fight would break out but all in all we were all mates and well behaved.
Secondary school still much the same for first year or so inter class..... but bullies from older kids appered on the scene.
THEN when those pesky hormones started those raw animal instincts often overcome the discipline we were given. Alpha males we all were. The girls however were still generally very well behaved
These days it appears to me that due to lack of discipline bad behaviour starts much earlier than in my day, and in both ***es, and at a level of viciousness not seen in my schooldays. Even many of the juniors have a real attitude problem even to each other.
But I guess my parents thought the same of me too!

I think my age group had the best of times, although everyone probably thinks that their times were best. I finished school in 1966 and I really do think that I enjoyed my youth in the best ever times for this country. There was never a better time for music (1958 - 1979), the football was better then than it is now and you could do and say what you liked without some PC idiot piping up with criticism and fake outrage! We’re all more grumpy these days, much more fun about then.

Totally agree with you Ketts. I left around about the same time, 1964. Probably looking through 'rose coloured spectacles' but to my mind there was far more respect for authority and less of the me and my rights attitude. I may have lived in a bubble but life seemed more gentle, if that makes sense. Yes, you're correct, I do think that we were the lucky generation. Second World War over, free NHS, grants if you wanted higher education, jobs available, mortgages easy to get. I could go on. Where we are today doesn't look much like progress to me!

As for the snow, this recent snowfall reminded me of my youth, growing up in Halesowen. We lived on Mucklow Hill and any significant snowfall would usually cause a truck or bus to get stuck on the hill and it would take ages to get it moved, but that did get me off school as I could walk down to Halesowen Grammar School. After leaving school, that snow induced road blockage did get me a few days off work!
