‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ was originally entitled ‘Babe, I hate to go’, written in 1967. John Denver’s real name was John Deutschendorf Jr, and was born in Roswell, New Mexico, the location of the infamous Roswell UFO/flying saucer incident. He changed his name to ‘Denver’ after the state capital of his favourite US state, Colorado. He was killed in a flying accident in an experimental plane over Monterey Bay but at the time he was disqualified from flying owing to a succession of convictions for drunk driving, although there was no evidence of him having had any alcohol prior to his fatal flight.
