West Brom appear to be back in the race to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles - after the player met this lunchtime with Mikel Arteta to try to rescue a deadline day loan move.

In a 20-minute meeting, Arteta, along with the club’s Technical Director Edu, made it clear they were still willing to let Maitland-Niles leave, but were reluctant to let him join a rival club in Leicester, which had been the England star’s favoured destination.

A potential agreement between Arsenal and Southampton was in place – but now looks dead after the player emphasised he wanted to play in his preferred position in midfield. Southampton, however, were looking for Maitland-Niles as cover at wing back.

Newcastle remain interested in the player but are also in talks with Arsenal over a loan deal for midfielder Joe Willock - Premier League rules stating a club cannot loan two players from the same club.

Having looked to be out of the race, today’s lunchtime meeting looks to have re-ignited Sam Allardyce’s chances of a deadline day loan move.

Maitland-Niles has now left the Arsenal training ground and is awaiting developments in North London.
