On our Ist holiday aged 5, Mom and Dad took us to Bournemouth.
We went on the steam train, think it was from Snow hill I know we caught the train from West Brom but can't remember if we walked to New ST.
62 years ago and still remember being on the beach for the ist time.
Haven't been back since.

Was a cheap package holiday to Mallorca and I was 3 so around 1970, nearly drowned as managed to escape the room at around 6am walked down to the pool and while trying to fish leaves out fell in! Lucky for me some German tourist happened to be walking past and pulled me out, to this day I still have a memory of floating down and the tiles of the pool. Didn’t go on a plane again until I was 18 and paid for it myself!
Watcha Lloyd! Hope you are keeping well. You would probably have gone from New Street to Bournemouth via Bristol on the old Midland Railway and from there on the once Somerset and Dorset Railway lines to Bournemouth. Probably took hours as well!
We used to go to Paignton on the GWR from Wolverhampton Low level, used to take six to seven hours as every other bugger was doing the same thing. The trains used to be nose to tail for nearly the whole trip.
Great days though.
Hi Woody, we are keeping well and I hope you and your family are.
What I remember of the train journey was standing on the platform and smell of the big plume of steam and walking up down the carriage .
Happy days, we didn't have car or much money but we had a great childhood.
From old photographs I believe that my first holidays were also at Bournemouth, or Poole to be precise. We stayed in a hotel at Canford Cliffs. I have been back down there on many occasions, took my children often, either camping or staying at The Antelope in the old High St, Poole. I love that area but it does get overcrowded in the Summer, especially during school holidays.
We were lucky because we had family who lived in Lytham St Anne’s and so we had lots of day trips and one night stop overs there as a nipper.
Our first proper holiday was in 1971 when I was 9 and we stayed in Blackpool at a guest house next door to where mum and dad had spent their honeymoon in 1958, The Athol hotel they stayed in is still there I believe.
Next year we went to Butlins in Bognor Regis which was great and the weather was superb in 72.
Bumped into a good friend from school while I was there as well.
Most of my summer holidays I spent at my nan’s houses in Harrogate because my nan’s both lived by the huge local playing field and I was able to safely play football and cricket from 9.00am through to 10.00pm at night.
Evocative memories of the 70’s for me.
I wouldn’t swop those days for anything.
As far as I can remember we went to either Ryde on the Isle of Wight or Barnmouth in Wales. Oddly I can't remember where we went when I was aged 11 to 16.
There's a photo of me taking my first steps on Ramsgate prom so must be my first.
First one I remember is Sandown IOW. Weather was fantastic.
Favourite as a kid was Weymouth. Still like the place now.
We went on caravan holidays when I was aged three and four so 1971 and 1972. There were six of us and the caravans seemed tiny even to a toddler.
One was to Weston Super Mare and the other was to Aberystwyth. I don't remember which was first though.
We caught trains to both. My only abiding memories of both holidays other than the cramped conditions are that we changed trains and both holiday spots were windy.
That and my parents couldn't find our key when we got back from a day out. Somebody had left a small window open and so I was dropped through it to open the door from the inside.
I landed on my head, one of many blows to the head I had during childhood. Explains a lot 😊 .
