Hmmm...strictly speaking that’s obviously true and you are someone capable of differentiating.
Unfortunately not everyone is and I suspect many will all too often just identify those of Asian appearance as Muslims.
As an example, the day after 9/11 as Deputy Head at a school I had to deal with directly related incidents of bullying. One particular Asian kid had been taunted on the way to school, called ‘Bin Laden’ and told he was going to be put in the bin and set fire to. Nasty stuff from the usual suspects...it would have been bad enough if he’d actually been Muslim...he was actually a British born Sikh of Indian origin.
So...yes, technically you’re right but I suspect there are usually very clear links between racism and Islamophobia.

Takes me back a while rA. Captaining a cricket team around 1990-ish, we were short a man and we had a young Sikh lad in the U14s who could bat and was a lethal leg spinner. I phoned him and asked him if he would like a game with the seniors. He jumped at it, I knew he would. Back at the clubhouse at tea, one of the oppo made the "jest" of "hope your head soon gets better". I grabbed the idiot, put him up against the wall and explained how wrong it was of him to make racist comments (technically it wasn't racist it was religionist), why he should apologise and what might happen if he didn't (a definite reporting to the KNCB whose office was in our pavillion and I knew the entire commitee very well through business, socialising and of course through cricket plus unspecified other things that might happen). Ravi got the apology. I then approached the idiot again and apologised as I shouldn't have put him up aganst the wall as I did and finished off by telling him that he was the real culprit and had noone to blame but himself for what had happened.

15 years earlier I would probably have chinned the lad. One mellows with age it seems.

As it was, he chinned you??! And is the nice end to the story that Ravi took 6-38 to spin your team to victory?

We can all lay our anecdotes on the table, my observation (through my 'unfiltered' social media streams, ie I don't block folk just because I don't like what they say) is that there is a very sophisticated understanding about who is Muslim and who is 'other South Asian'. There's also a recent and growing kickback against the only-recently popularised 'BAME' from all sides, neither black nor Asian folk feeling that such a coverall serves the problems of their distinct groups fairly.

Er, no. I'm more of a chinner than a chinnee IIRC we did win.

Given that we don’t play again until a week on Friday I think you might be in need of a few ‘anecdotes’.
The point of mine was that there are very fine lines and distinct overlaps between racism and those who are anti Muslim which I fully appreciate is a religion not a ‘race’.
It’s quite likely to be my fault, but I’m just not sure what you’re suggesting about this ‘sophisticated understanding’ you speak of or what your last sentence means.
