And who the **** is gonna loan money to a country that's just reneged on it's debt? The SNP threatened this in 2014 and although they very quickly withdrew the threat it was too late the damage was done. The UK believe it or not has the luxury of borrowing money relatively cheaply, a newly formed Scotland wouldn't, especially as we seem to hand over freebies like sweeties.

Freebies would end almost overnight.

Spectator magazine had very good article on how taxation rates would likely go in Scotland....income tax 26%, vat around 40- 45%..... but as trodee says what happened in Cyprus or a wealth tax is even scarier.....although I still think a wealth tax will happen in the UK anyway.

I think our std of living would drop pretty dramatically, pretty quickly.

Exactly. If we are told the true damage that independence would do to Scotland and more importantly the people of Scotland then no sane person imo could vote yes. We will not get the true figures from the SNP because they know it makes ridiculously bad reading and the zealots want independence despite this knowledge.

I think that all age groups with the exception of mid 20s voted No in the referendum. We had a terrific discussion on the old official forum about it and with this election being clearly sold as a second chance at independence I hope the there will be a good discussion.
I was doubtful last time and I am still doubtful at the moment. It isn't a good reason to vote for independence just to get rid of the Tories, or Westminster or the Queen etc IMO. We need to understand what independence will mean.

You can see the difficulties that making a decision in principle to leave the EU caused. The basic principle was that we would not have to pay into their budget and the money could be invested in the NHS. There were comments about the rest of the world growing at a much faster rate and Europe was history not the future.

I liked the idea that we would not be governed by the unelected European Commission, that national issues could be addressed by the people that we voted for and wanted to run our country ie Britain. Somehow these arguments made sense to me and I was really pleased that all political parties chose to support the result of that referendum. The SNP quite rightly didn't support the decision and that was OK by me because they campaigned to remain.

They still want to return to Europe if the Scottish electorate chooses independence at a second indyref and I cannot understand the logic of this strategy. The trouble created by the Irish/ NI border is still not clear and I think it would be much more difficult to create any kind of meaningful border between Scotland and England.

I think it would be wise to wait and see how Brexit beds down. That's going to take quite a while and it may be that the things that we like about Europe such as ease of travel, free trade and shared policing etc will be possible. If that were to be the case I don't see independence in Europe as being much of a strategy for the SNP.

I think Brexit is a bit like McPake. Give it/him a chance, it's/he's new and everybody is learning. There are alternative views available!!

Scotland doesn't have any debt, it all belongs to the UK. If England wanted to retain the rights as a successor state, then it keeps the so-called debt. Otherwise England can also get its independence from the UK and we can split everything evenly. And the UK doesn't borrow money, it creates it. By the way, Faroe Islands managed to borrow a fair chunk just recently, wonder how they managed that. Maybe the Bank of England will give us a loan since a Scot created it.

It's all relative, I could get pished on a fiver when I started my first job in 1989 on 10k a year. I'm surprised someone so in love with Sweden is so aghast at the thought of higher taxation?

How does New Zealand manage to not have super-high taxes, genuinely interested in your thinking there.
