I firmly believe that this type of play all started with the introduction of the foreign goalkeepers into our game. Even before the lighter ball they punched or palmed the ball away rather than catching it.

Regarding Johnstone, yes he has been excellent for us this season but as I've stated before, he does have his weaknesses. He does seem rooted to his line on occasions plus his communication with his defenders needs attention. His distribution also could improve. As for the England spot, I feel that there isn't a great deal between the four of them. It's a position we used to be very strong in but with the introduction of the overseas players, not any more.
A good analysis much of which I agree with, particularity your observation on the introduction of overseas keepers, something I have made reference to many times. A big problem is the young generation see and try to emulate this style of goalkeeping. For me, making the save and retaining the ball is the greatest of feelings and it obviously does not provide the opposition the opportunity to pick up on the lose ball.

I was trying to help a young’n this past weekend and was at pains to get him to catch the ball rather than palm away. He got it quite quickly and was soon catching rather that palming. Goalkeeping is specialized and it is so easy to criticise but Sam Johnston’s has not played at this level because he is not good enough.

To be honest, all Albion keepers have been strongly criticised by fans, Carson was given a very hard time as was Foster (as much as he was loved) and so now is Sam Johnstones’ turn.

One last thing of note, a defense can be wary and lack confidence in the keeper behind them but the the reverse can also be applied and with the defense we have had this season, I reckon Sam Johnstone might well be lacking in confidence of the players in front of him.
