If he loses one or two key players he will persist with it using players out of position etc, which will turn into a shambles. In our case his first 3/4 years were good, we had some exciting players in their prime who were able to execute the style and system - ie Hayes, McGinn, Rooney, Shinnie, Jack, McLean etc. There would be other occassions where we'd be on a winning run and inexplicably he'd make changes to the system and personnel trying to be clever, which would innevitably end in disaster. I'd say he's limited tactically - he thinks he's smarter than he actually is - we did well for a few years because he had some really good players more than anything else.

He also signs players without thinking about where they're actually going to fit into the team - we ended up with about 100 defensive midfielders at one point. He always has to have a huge lump of wood up front as well.

To be fair, he WAS a good manager to begin with - he just outstayed his welcome, and the last 2-3 years were unbelievably boring and stale. Wish him well wherever he ends up though.
This is nail on the head.

    Is better than Sam Allardyce.

    He's a good manager - not a great one.

Sorted us out and got us back to where we should be after years of abject mismanagement on and off the park, but he then hit his ceiling and couldn't do any more - sadly that was 3 years ago and it took the club 3 years to realise this resulting in stultifying, dreadful football for most of that period.

My main criticism is he is unbelievably cautious as a manager. He only ever worries about stopping the opposition and what they might do to you, instead of focusing on what you could do to them. That's the case regardless of who you are playing. Its incredibly frustrating.

The result is tedious, negative, safety first football. I don't think WBA fans want that.

His style of football (certainly last few years) is also dreadful to watch. Constant hoofball to a big target man. We did play some nice stuff at the start of last season when we had 3 actual footballers up front, but that was kind of forced by accident because of injuries - he soon resorted to type.

I think from your point of view Bristol City is a good comparison. I don't think he has it at Championship level.

Aberdeen are the biggest club he'll ever manage - and that includes if he goes to WBA
Thanks for the update lads and the good wishes. Got a neighbour from Perth who is very happy right now. Nothing you've said convinces me he is the correct man for the job right now.

Dons bigger than the Baggies. I don't think so. We maybe down in Championship but we will get crowds of 25,000.

Scottish Football. About as exciting as The Boat Race. Two in it and over by Easter.

The Boat Race is better. There’s always the chance of seeing some privileged entitled future cabinet minister or news editor fall in and drown, and seeing the Lady Mayoress kiss the winning team’s cox* at the presentation is the highlight of the day.

    Good luck to The Throstles.

*Jimmy Greaves had St John nearly pishing his pants when he said that live on air one Saturday.

Unless they involved my team which was usually depressing rather than boring no. We did manage to stick 8 past Champions League finalists Chelsea and once gain didn't lose to the Dogheads otherwise known as Wolverhampton' we never beat West Brom even though we've spent lots more money' Wanderers.

You however obviously do spend lots of time watching Premier League Football. How else could you an opinion?

Now now. !! I`ve just driven to and back from Tipton. It`s mental just how big a catchment area all your teams have !!

You have to remeber that the population of Scotland is one tenth that of England. So " size " is a relevant concept. Quid pro rata your 25k crowds equate to 2500 up here. So we need to compare you to Hamilton or Raith Rovers ?

( Raith Rovers who won a cup , got into European football and took Bayern Munich to a close enough game !! )

All I know is your Baggies have a decent enthusiastic support who seem to have stood by them through thick and thin. Good Een .!! Boing boingboing.

Now , off ye go , and let us all get back to moaning about how coming 4th ( again ) and qualifying for a crap European competiton where we will have a couple of great away days and crash horribly out of , before the league sections start ,.....again is our sorry lot !!! COYR !!!

Derek McInnes would do well in the lower leagues of England and I think he would be a good fit for the West Brom job.

I’d be very very surprised if McInnes was to be offered a position as high as West Brom.
If he wants another shot down south, he’ll have to go much lower or prove himself again with the likes of Utd or Hearts.
    I’m doubting it.

Best job MacInnes may be offered is the Scotland one after Clarke steps down
