Today I asked the wife to pick me one up whilst she was out shopping.
Always a terrific paper to catch up on not only our local big teams but also a very in depth look at the National and local non league scene.
What a shock I had today, this once formidable publication has become a total rag, an almost pointless piece of a r s e paper.
It’s sad when something reaches the point of needing to be put out of its misery but this is now the case with the Sunday Mercury.
It’s the same with our local paper The Stourbridge News which was once a superb local paper, now it doesn’t even have news of Stourbridge FC or any local football, back in the day it even had the Sunday League results and it was always a buzz to see my own goals reported.
So much of what we have know in our lifetimes is now being confined to history within our actual lifetimes.
Sad but true. We’re left now with digital reports from people who can’t spell and don’t know the first thing!
That is sad to hear but I am surprised it is still going.
The Sunday Mercury is owned by Reach PLC. They are owned by the Mirror Group of Newspapers including the Express, Mirror, Record in Scotland, Daily Star, Sunday People……all a particular style. The group own ump**** regional newspapers including the Birmingham Mail.
In my opinion they all have similar style and content. No room for individual journalism as they have to toe the line of their owner. All absolute rubbish and not worth wasting money on. That’s the current paper media for you……avoid!
Mercury used to be a decent read but I don't think I've bought a paper for about a decade.
Used to love the Argus when it was a standalone publication back in the day.
The internet does for me now...... video killed the radio star and all that as Buggles (I think it was) sang.
PS: I actually worked for The B'ham Post & Mail, who produced The Mail, the Post, Sports Argus and The Sunday Mercury when it was all produced in the centre of B'ham, before it's move to Coventry.![]()
Tony, you might be able to correct me on this. When we went away on holiday my Dad used to be able to get a Mercury on the Sunday. Sometime in the 1980’s I took my family on holiday to Broadstairs in Kent. On the Sunday I walked up to a newsagent to get a paper and was chuffed to see they had the Mercury. Broadstairs is a bit out of the way and I am sure I am not imagining this.
Getting The Argus on a Saturday evening was a big deal and I would be sent out to wait for the delivery. When I moved away from home Dad would send it to me and my Es*** workmates would enjoy looking at it. I was really disappointed when it ceased production.
I can also vaguely recall another short lived Saturday night sports paper that was blue. Again I may be wrong.
Fond memories.
Quite right 165, when we moved to North Wales in 2004 I was still able to get the Mercury at the local paper shop, but that didn't last very long.
The Sports Argus/The Pink was originally published by the Evening Despatch, the B'ham Mail published the Blue Mail Sports paper until the Mail bought and closed down the Evening Despatch and took over publishing the Argus

I worked with Tony at the Post and Mail for years and yes you could get the Sunday Mercury in the summer at holiday resorts especially Weston Super Mare and Blackpool etc. My father was circulation manager for the Sunday Mercury and had to ensure the publication got to all the locations. A lot went by train to the coast etc.
