Not illegal immigrants, just your standard legal immigrants. I'm sure baby Emma was introduced to a few Canadians before they moved to England for work reasons.

Couldn't fail to notice she didn't mention Mum or Dad in her winner's speech (maybe she forgot) but did later when interviewed by Tiger Tim. First true success of the LTA and the system they've put in place.

Unfortunately it was dollars so she'll have to win two more

On that basis she's perfectly entitled to be regarded and indeed celebrated as a British tennis player, and I dare say a fair few Romanians, Chinese and (maybe) Canadians are proud of her too.
I was trying to be ironic, but it obviously didn't work.

She was born in Toronto, not Bucharest , so even allowing for Tectonic shift , she ain't Romanian .

Sad but typical. We’re all celebrating a young kid’s extraordinary achievement, and BFP has to introduce politics into the thread.

Uh... I think the point is: Ultimately, we are all sons & daughters of immigrants. Judging by her surname Emma is just a bit more recent.

    [Edit]
Therefore - at the risk of stating the bldn obvious - why do some people hate contemporary immigrants so much?

There’s none as intolerant, than those that preach intolerance

Interestingly I did think last night watching the final what a joy it was to watch without any forced Woke political agendas being put in front of everyone. That’s how sport should be, back on topic let’s hope she goes from strength to strength!

Point understood. This is where emojis sometimes come in handy!

As 60YearsaPie says, this is a sporting (not political) success story for a British player born in Canada with Romanian and Chinese heritage which should be celebrated. To the best of my knowledge, Emma's parents were legal immigrants into the UK regardless of where they originated or lived previously, and Emma herself has been living in this country for as long as she is old enough to remember. There's nothing to see here except an 18-year-old Brit achieving something truly remarkable.

When you consider how long and hard Andy Murray had to work to win his first Grand Slam title, Emma Raducanu's rate of progress boggles the mind. The interesting thing now will be to see how she copes with the 'pressure' of being expected to win things in the future. Serena Williams thrived on that expectation, but others have struggled to maintain that standard. I remember a young Ana Ivanovic winning the French Open and never quite being able to recapture that moment again, but all the signs so far are that Raducanu's mentality is very strong. She'll be tested though, because the celebrity status brings a lot of distractions and plenty of jealous critics. She's already had to dispatch Piers Morgan!

It's a wonderful achievement no doubt and having those two young ladies in the final was a breath of fresh air. Women's tennis has been on it's a**e for a while now IMO, hence the longevity of Serena Williams with nobody to challenge her. It's probably quite revealing that a qualifier and a none-seeded player made the final.

I'm not sure about legality at the best of times....

If you were being cynical, you'd say that the legal system exists simply to protect the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

    Apologies for being "political".
