    Elmdon Airport

Talking about age I have actually flown abroad from the old airport in the sixties.
Also flown abroad from Manston which is now closed.
Also travelled by train from Wolverhampton Low Level to Paddington.
Watched Albion play at Maine Road, Roker Park, Filbert Street, Highfield Road, the Baseball Ground, Highbury the Goldstone Ground, Ayresome Park and the Victoria Ground.
These grounds will never be known to modern football fans.

Low level to Paddington was always my proffered way of travelling to London. You seemed to pass through a better class of countryside somehow. Also the approaches to London were more interesting and of course the alternative , Euston, was a dirty confusing pig of a station. The fact that you were usually pulled by a "King" or "Castle" also added to the pleasure.

    Great days!

King John. Not the cleanest example and facing North to Birkenhead instead of South to Paddington but still better than nothing!

Remember Manston Airport very well as I had to go there to sort their books out when Invicta Airlines ceased trading. It was used recently as a lorry car park to prevent the M20 from clogging up. Shame that there are no plans to reopen it as an airport because it has nice long runway,

I’m sure it wouldn’t, not on this forum, unlike another which is run by Adolf and his mates!

I flew from the old Elmdon Airport to Glasgow and Edinburgh. I also travelled on the overnight train to those Scottish cities, they used to serve excellent breakfasts on those trains! As a lad, I used to go and stay with relatives in London and always preferred to go from Snow Hill to Paddington rather than New Street to Euston, as another post states, it was a far more pleasant journey. New Street Station used to be an awful dump, not much better now, whereas Snow Hill was a beautiful building, yes, and it was the better one that was demolished. However, you can travel these days from the minimalistic Snow Hill to London, although it goes into Marylebone rather than Paddington (cheaper than the New St route, too, I believe).

Yes been to all of those grounds to see us play except for the Goldstone ground.

However I can also add 2 others off the top of my head, both who had cricket connections, namely the County ground at Northampton and also Feethams at Darlington.

At both Elmdon and Manston you had to walk across the tarmac and climb the steps to board. Funnily enough the last time we flew from Birmingham International they had the builders in and we had to do the same again.

I am sure we flew with Invicta, the plane was similar to an old Dakota, we flew on Friday night and had the day in Ramsgate.
The same scheduled flight a couple of months before crashed into a mountain with no survivors. You can read about it on Wiki titled the Pyrenees air disaster.
