This subject got me wondering how often we have been in the top flight as I wasn’t 100% sure, in over 90 years it’s apparently 4 seasons, those 3 early 80s and the one under Warnock

Yep, hard to say we genuinely belong up there but it's nice to think we could one day. Bournemouth had their day in the sun and Brentford are having theirs. Neither of those would have been predictable 20-odd years ago.

Yep definitely possible, I tend to think the first hurdle will be the hardest though.

Agreed. This league really needs to have a fairer promotion and relegation quota with League Two.

7 league goals from 17 games, that's on track for 18 from 44 I think. Business as usual and where did we finish the past two seasons?

For a team playing 1 striker with lots of creators behind him that won't translate into promotion. So when those gilt-edged chances go begging, the groans of anguish are the sound of our 4th season in non-league being sealed (and part of the reason we're down in 6th now). He's playing well and seems to improve his all-round game every year, but I'm sure the club's analysts are looking at this and know what's required and what output won't cut it.

Kyle talks about having a target but doesn't reveal it in interviews. It has to be 25, right? I think that's much more than a personal target, it's what we need him to hit to be promoted.
The way this thread has gone with all the chat about our status in this league and also the effectiveness of our main striker has been very interesting.

I was probably a bit unkind in my statement that Wootton ‘goes missing’ as that implies lack of effort and I would never accuse him of that. I would more say a lack of effectiveness or lack of ability to come up with a winner in tight away games like the other night.

As for us being in this league, owners of this club should have the wherewithal and provide the resources to be beating the likes of BW, Eastleigh and Bromley on a fairly consistent basis. With only two promotion places and all the money that has been spent though it’s going to take an almighty effort to get up season, which to me looks just out of reach for us currently.

Do the owners have enough brass to compete with the big spenders?

When you also look where Brighton, Burnley and Swansea were a few years ago.

The day I am happy that we got a point at Boreham Wood is the day hell will freeze over.
So you are saying a point away to the team 2nd to top in our league isn't good enough?
For whatever reason Boreham were 2nd so whatever they are doing must be half decent.
The problem result was away at eastleigh let's hope our point away at 2nd to top is the start of another run.

In isolation the result was fine, we can debate the ways all day long.
Ardley wasting our parachute money and failing to capitalise on our status as the big boys of the league through to his negative football designed not to lose. Respecting the point far to often instead of going for the three.
Budget wise I expect we are no longer top two in this league possibly 4/5th with which seems a conservative approach followed by our owners.
As it stands we are nicely placed to kick on it can go either way a full on push for the top spot or at worst a play off place.

I’ve a feeling the top brass have the, err, brass, to compete with anyone in this league…and at least the one above it, but they’re obviously weary of doing so….which has both its positives and negatives.

What slightly worries me is that they seem intent on using this style of football to achieve success, seemingly without another option. Is it the owners dictating how Neal Ardley and IB are to set up their sides to play, when perhaps both of them may see the flaws in it?

It is such a hard style to get right, and even more so at our level and requires the players to be 8/10 every game. It’s just not possible. Very often we don’t create enough chances to dominate or win games comfortably. I’d like to see us mix it up a bit more and get players like Wootton doing what they do best.

IB is playing the way he wants. The owners have there own ideas and got a coach/manager in that they feel can deliver.
We sign players we feel we can improve by playing a certain way. Most teams in the Prem and championship play a possession style of football. By getting our players playing this way, and players like Rodrigues flourishing (yet still a rough diamond) will have the odd scout at those levels looking - that’s where the money is and it’s there money we want. We don’t want to be accepting 100k off Bradford we want several hundred thousand and sell on clauses from much higher up. That’s our model. The owners want us to be self financing.
The hope is that we develop players and get promoted. You would think if Radar works then the 2 objectives will co-exist.
