Chalmers looked like he had kicked on last season but injuries got in the way at the worst times. This should have been his breakout season.

These guys should be looking at Declan Glass, he was out for a year with a very serious injury at the time when he was on loan in League One. Despite that, he has came back and stood out in the Premiership. Its very rare you see a player improve that much while being out injured for so long.
Good post - I love the guy and as for Glass i had totally ruled him out but he is there too. Imagine a future for next season where the 3 M's, Glass, Freeman, Appere and Watson all kick on. even 2 of them would be a great thing.

We have probably the biggest group of talented players (in numbers) for a long, long time. There are a ton of guys like Nathan Cooney, Adam Hutchinson, etc who haven't even gotten close to the first team yet. Now, law of averages say that you are only going to get a small number of these guys who make it, but we should in theory get a lot of use out of them.

There will be some of the players who go on to bigger and better things (Kerr Smith for example) and there will be a few of the guys who just never make the grade. But we do have a chance of getting 3-4 "Craig Easton's" (for the want of a better example) that we might get 150-250 games out of, who will have stellar careers at Tannadice.

We just have to remember that this is not a 'today' project, this is something that can set us up for the next 10 years or so, so lets give these guys time and hopefully they get the number of games required to progress.

A more recent example of a Craig Easton would be Jamie Robson I guess?

The question is does our support have the patience to put up with the inevitable inconsistences youth players have ?

That would be. Worrying that my memory can't remember 4 months ago but can 20 years ago!

Glass has bags of natural talent though and that will always shine through. If you have the right attitude to go with it you'll do alright, which he does. You just need to listen to his interview after getting hooked in the first half vs Motherwell to know he's going to have a good future in the game. His attitude is first class.

If the team is winning, exciting the fans, playing well, showing hunger - any combination of those factors they will definitely get backed. You just have to look back at how many former youth players speak with genuine affection about the club. On the other Hand, we as fans are fickle, being young didn’t spare likes of robson, Fraser or souttar during our recent car crash season.

Bigger concern for me is we only ever seem to tie these youngsters down to 2 year contracts. If you want to make a profit, then that only really gives you one season, we need to get these guys on 3 year deals early, almost before they make their mark. Without knowing exact background, Banks classic example, he should have been given an extension before getting first team Opportunities, he’d have snapped up the opportunity at that stage before he had options.

The club rarely wants to commit to 3 years it also knows up till they are 23 there is a development fee anyway so its pretty hard for youngsters to find another club
