There seems to be very little progress on that forge island site since the buses left what must be 2 years ago don’t know what they’re doing with it buildings wise but they could do worse than clean the river up surely
Nobody’s going to want to sit outside a new bar/ restaurant whatever at side of the river if it’s all scruffy full of crap
I presume what they’re aiming for is a South Yorkshire version of York!

Plus you will still get that stale urine smell from the weir.

Further upstream is the sewerage works which is allowed to discharge waste untreated water directly into the river during “ exceptional conditions” which is fairly often. The aeration effect of the weir releases the smell.

The lighting is not great down there either, especially with all the kerbs. Who decides if they let home fans down New York Way or not. Given the amount of police for Bolton game, they must have had some influence.

Schools, doctors, water treatment capacity, play areas for children, traffic management all needed
All that costs a lot of money and requires space in itself and if it isn’t provided then undesirable ghettos can spring up leading to antisocial behaviour and crime which isn’t what the town centre needs
It’s unlikely the Local Planning Authority would allow one without the other
