    Pressing Matters

In this article myself and Colin take a closer look at Wyscout's PPDA, a metric used to identify a teams press intensity. We discuss how it is calculated, it's effectiveness as a tool for analysis and how it might be used for player recruitment.

As usual has a focus on the National League and includes some bits about Notts in there as well (hence the lack of O/T in the topic header).

I was listening to a semi-comedic football podcast earlier this season in which the subject of pressing came up, the co-host - who is probably around my age - said "In my day, we used to call that 'trying'".

Now that the press seems to be so much more an important part of the game, I do wonder how much more appreciated Duane Darby would be if he was playing for Notts now. I thought he was great - causing a lot of chaos and panic in the opposition defence, the lads at the back of Z bock seemed to like him a lot as well, but online I got the impression most people thought he was a waste of space.

I can't think of a player pre-Trust era who worked as hard as him off the ball. I reckon we would have done a lot better that 1998/99 season if he hadn't broken his leg pre-season, the one when we were in the same division as Man Cty, Keegan's Fulham and Stoke. As it was, we looked like we were going down until Stall, Beadle and Rapley arrived.

Having said that, he did only score 6 the following season and his next club was Rushden & Diamonds.

I would sooner have one Duane Darby than five Gavin Gordon's
