Whilst totally condemning Russia's invasion does anyone think that Putin had any justification in being concerned about the security of Russia.
Remarks have been made over the last few days of Ukraine's "Nazi" squad fighting the Russians in the east of the country and also negative comments from Hungary regarding their churches in Ukraine and the banning of their language in schools. It's also clear that the Ukraine government were leaning towards the West.

I'll try and keep my reply brief barrie.

Almost ninety years ago when Hitler began his sweep eastwards the consequence was upwards of twenty two million Soviet citizens lost their lives.

Post-war the Soviets were persuaded in good faith to dissolve the Warsaw Pact. The countries formerly belonging to the Pact; Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania have all been gobbled up by NATO.

Consequently the Former Soviet Union (FSU) has had all of its western "Buffer Zone" removed.

Now call me naive if you want too, but if I was sitting in the Kremlin, I'd be thinking "WTF" & how did we allow this to happen?

It's clear and obvious the US have an agenda to push eastwards and they have used NATO has a vehicle to set up camp on Russia's borders.

What is happening in Ukraine is deplorable and unmitigable but the UN should have seen this coming, and full and frank diplomacy should have prevented this humanitarian catastrophe.

I can't help think if I was in Putin's shoes I would not be putting at risk another 22 million plus Russian citizens at the hands of the NATO alliance membership expansionism.

    that the Question - Barrie.

why should the agenda of one decide the policy of another, what gives them that right ?....and what happens if a country feels threatened, doesn't like being told how to run their business, should it defend itself, or bow to the challenger.

as for Ukraine, it, its People, have been played, how nasty it that.

and to reinforce BT's clear-cut response.....

You need to watch winter of fire on Netflix to understand why the Ukrainians will always resist Russian rule .

If both sides are to be believed a brutal military dictatorship run by a homophobic tyrant is attacking another country of homophobic racists with one side telling the world to keep its nose out or else and the other side urging the rest of the world to pile in. Have I got that right? What I see is monumental suffering by peoples who are none of these things. Have I got that right?

Wouldn`t the world have been a better place if Obama,Biden and Nuland had kept their grubby hands off Ukraine in 2014.The blood is on their hands but try convincing the sheep that.
They are now sitting back watching the fireworks and ordering another coffee as per usual.

The outcome, as you so correctly point out CiB, of meddling in the Ukraine is terrible to behold. In July 1914 Australia-Hungary declared war on Serbia and thereafter foreign powers were drawn inexorably into what became the hideous slaughter of WW1. I could hardly believe that anyone would now be calling-with for example appeals to NATO to intervene by enforcing a no-fly zone- for an escalation of this dreadful war in the Ukraine when the consequences of doing so are almost unimaginable in horror.
