Ra, the ones in Poland/Hungary/Romania etc, don't want to go too far from the homeland and family.
This is where aid needs sending more than anything. They want to go home more than anything. So those countries are going to get swamped and exxpect huge dorms in schools/leisure centres etc. Probably something our judges would cry about.
For us, those with family here, need our attention.
This is priority over any illegal immigrant. Have ID, have family? No messing, just get it done.

Again, I’m sure you have a point, that many - possibly a majority - of the fleeing Ukrainians would prefer to stay close to their homeland, but that doesn’t answer my question. Why is space/housing less of a problem for countries adjacent to Ukraine than it is for us?

GP...just for once could you stop the personal point scoring/sh1t stirring?
I was ashamed because of the scenes I saw at Calais which included anything but ‘generosity’ to the handful of refugees wanting to come to the UK who appeared to be being told they had to travel to Paris to obtain the required visa. Mind you...it was on my ‘beloved’ BBC so that probably doesn’t count.

I don't know which countries are taking these ukrainians in the most but its only fair that its shared out between ALL Nato countries who got themselves involved by sending arms over, that includes USA and Canada, the UK needs to do its bit as best as it can but we are running to capacity as it is, we're an island surrounded by water not land and the last time I checked we weren't building anymore land, with the best will in the world we can only do so much, its the equivalent of sending the whole population of Birmingham to Ibiza

Actually, I rather think the people of Birmingham would enjoy being sent to Ibiza

the response I think you'll get in due course will be 'invent some money and space to accommodate them'. This discussion's been had before when there was a lot of bleating about diminishing public services, more chance of Russia and Ukraine finding common ground than the forum members in question

With respect Stenson, and I do mean that, I don’t think anyone has suggested that the UK should take a disproportionate amount of Ukrainians.
There are thirty countries in NATO however, plus others such as Austria, Finland and Sweden. Spread out fairly between those nations things become much more manageable and we should surely be playing our part not seeking to distance ourselves (again) from the rest of Europe.
Putin seeks to divide and rule. We, imo, need to be very alert to that...we’ve obviously isolated ourselves from the other EU countries in the last few years. From the points of view of our own self respect and survival we need, again imo, to play our proper part.

Of course, even in the current climate, we could listen to Nicola Surgeon and her mad dog SNP.

Meanwhile in a genuinely compassionate country. The Dutch have announced they are ready and willing to take 50,000 Ukrainian refugees this month. If necessary plans will be drawn up to accept more down the line.

We also had a radio and TV "donatathon" yesterday. At the end of the transmission the total stood at €106M. That will grow over the next few days as more donations come in. The government donated £25M in aid last week and added a further £15M yesterday. That £40M is over and above the money collected from the "donatathon".

Conversely, McDonald's and Coca Cola have said they will not be terminating their operations in Russia. Will there be a boycott in the West?
