Been trying to give meter reading for both gas and leccy
Both sites having technical problems
The (good) advice by people like Martin Lewis for people to submit accurate meter readings before hike due on 1st April has seen so many attempt to do so that the various companies have seen their systems unable to cope.
Our own electric bill-we only have electric-will rise substantially from £128/month to about £230 due, in part, to the fact that our old fixed deal was so good. The new ofgem cap (from April-Sept) is now 28.34p/Kwh with daily standing charge being 45.34p From September, there is likely going to be a further hike unless there is a drastic change. The cap is only applicable to standard (not all green) variable tariffs.
For those interested, the cost of leaving your TV on standby will rise from about £12 a year to just over £15 and a combined amp and CD player on standby will cost you the same. A TV box (eg BT or Virgin) will cost around £11-£15 a year, although companies recommend these are not turned off due to updates etc.
To work out how much other appliances cost when in use, the rule of thumb is to divide their power by 1000 to give the amount they use per hour and then multiply this by your unit tariff charge. For example, a 50watt fan uses (at full power) (divide by 1000) 0.5kw/hour. If the unit charge is 28p/KWh it will cost you (0.5 X 28p) 1.4p to run each hour it is on.
All these figures look really small but they reckon the average UK household has 10 appliances on standby all the time inc TVs, games consoles etc. This could cost around £100 a year or just over £8 a month. These amounts may not bother some but I know I am going to have to be more frugal now to save a few quid -as well as pray for a decent extended summer to keep heating costs and the use of the tumble drier down.
All good suggestions....👍👍
Worst ones on standby are computers. These can use between 3 and 10KW when in "sleep" mode (and 60-300W when in use). 10kw divided by 1000 = 0.1kw/hour X 28p/kwh=2.8p/hour. Left on standby for, say 18 hours, this would cost 50.4p/day or £15.33/month and lower 3kw PC would be about £4.60/month. Obviously varies depending on level of kit you have in your set up but might be worth considering for any gamers on here.
Where can I get a smallish treadmill? I could put the dog in it, that should generate enough for something!
Only joking, lovely little creature!
