Notts County’s four-match unbeaten run in the National League ended with a nightmare 5-1 defeat to Torquay United.

The hammering meant the Magpies failed to avenge last season’s play-off semi-final defeat at Plainmoor and they remain in sixth place with seven games left to play this season.

It was a desperately poor performance in front of a large Notts following and even more disappointing following last weekend’s convincing win at Southend.

Here is how the Notts players rated in the match.

Vitezslav Jaros: Could do nothing about the goals and badly let down by the ten players in front of him. 5

Jayden Richardson: Unable to influence a game as an attacking force and struggled defensively. 4

Alex Lacey: Had one shot which went over the bar but will be desperately disappointed with his defensive display. 4

Connell Rawlinson: Like Lacey, couldn’t handle Torquay’s attacking talent. 4

Adam Chicksen: Torquay’s aggressive striker Danny Wright identified him as a weak link in the back three and dominated him all afternoon. 4

Dion Kelly-Evans: Has been in the running for the man-of-the-match award in almost every game since his return but hooked at half-time after a first-half horror show by the whole team. 4

Frank Vincent: Like Kelly-Evans, subbed at half-time but he was no worse than any of the other outfield players. 4

Harry Arter: Was unable to influence the game as Notts were over-run in midfield. 4

Matt Palmer: His consistency this season has been amazing but not at the races here. 4

Ruben Rodrigues: Notts’ main goal threat and provided the pass for Kyle Wootton’s goal but frustrated as little went right all afternoon. 5

Kyle Wootton: Given a torrid time by Torquay’s no-nonsense defenders but scored a fine goal. 5

Elisha Sam (for Kelly-Evans 45): Missed an absolute sitter to get Notts back in the game immediately after coming on and was otherwise anonymous. 4

Aaron Nemane (for Vincent 45): Sparked Notts into life after coming on at half-time but all his good work was wasted by his fellow attackers. 6

Jim O’Brien (for Arter 68): Entered the horror show too late to make a difference. 4

They are amazingly low ratings from the Red Rag, usually even a poor performance gets a 6. There are probably more ratings of 4 than we've seen all season in the rest of the games.

Comprehensively beaten three times on the road in the last six weeks, Chesterfield, Stockport and now Torquay.

Away record against the top 11 is W2 (at Grimsby & Daggers) D3 L5.

We're going to have to pull at least one rabbit out of the hat to reach the final.

Well that is a new low as we concede the highest amount of goals in a game that we have done at this level. It would not have been so bad had we scored three or four as well, but a four goal deficit is shockingly bad. It is completely unacceptable for Notts County in the National League to be crumbling so badly, and we can only hope that this gives the players, manager and coaches a kick up the backside and reality check that we need to and should be better if we are to stand any chance of getting out of the league this season.

I'm fed up of this teams soft underbelly and how it can crumble so easily. We need to win our individual battles and earn the right to play football first and foremost. We've got to learn regardless of which league we are in next season that we need some spoilers, and some physicality mixed with the technicality that's in the side. As Mo Ross mentioned we need some animals, and he was right.

To concede five goals at this level is an absolute embarrassment. The fans that made the journey all the way to Devon or those who went for the weekend deserved so much better. It's not just Torquay though, it was Cheaterfurlough and Stockport recently where we've been found wanting conceding 3 goals in those games, although in fairness Stockport was understandable.

Todays defeat ideally want's to be the last defeat in the league this season. If we can now go on a run where we win 5 out of the last 7 and get a couple of draws it will at least be redemption.

It's about time we started dishing out 3-0, 4-1 and 5-1 wins in the run in. It will be interesting to see the response we get on Friday. If we are serious about getting promoted we need to go for it starting Friday and not finish until the final whistle goes when we play Maidenhead.

Just got in to see the result. Annihilation / humiliation. Are Torquay really that good fgs? Perhaps it would be best if we don't make the playoffs.

I thought Ardley was a manager without talent but Burchy is looking worse. If a manager can't adapt his team's tactics to each team they play but wants to play powder-puff "classy" but predictable football every time - without seeing it's not working but unable to change - then we'll be outthought by every manager in the league. Those that have beaten us easily but not been promoted will do it again next season if they and we keep the same managers, they only have to play the same pressing game but we have to learn and improve and we aren't doing it against the teams that matter.

We battled and won 3-0 last week against Southend, a team with a manager who obvously hadn't heard about our now famous ability to collapse to a high press but yesterday? Lose one more game this season and it's more non-league for Notts County, a once proud club.

I think we need to look at our player recruitment and our style of play. Too many young kids and not enough grit and determination in the squad. 2U-2Me is all well and good and nice to watch when it works but as Talkie showed yesterday, direct can be more than effective. Why can't we employ some of both?

Had the Daggenham, Borehamwood and Chesterfield managers also not heard? Or had they out thought Burchy but forgot to tell the players to beat us?

When did Notts County stop being a proud club? Yesterday? Swindon away? Please for the love of God don't say Macclesfield at home! Maybe it's was in 1998 Lol

There isn’t a football club in the world that plays in an unpredictable way. You don’t need analysts to tell you how a team plays.
There are too many variables to simply say, our style didn’t or doesn’t work and we should adapt. Watch Man City v Liverpool today. Everyone whose seen them play before knows how they play, and they will play the same way today.
IB was hugely critical of the work rate yesterday. Of the way we didn’t battle. The way we simply didn’t compete. That’s not tactics. It’s not even the managers fault. It’s the players. They clearly think they are better than what they are and didn’t do the simple things close to that expected of them.
I know there will be those who say IB picked the team. He picked the same team that’s done well in recent weeks.
My only real concern is whether that performance yesterday was the players way of showing support to Cal? Assuming there is an issue.
