I remember my grandfather and uncle talking about 'spats' - thought it was something musical and so it was. Also the bad guy in "Some like it hot'', kind of a buzz word in the 50s and 60s... Say 'spats' often enough and it fast loses meaning. Silly name, silly habit, silly accessory, silly behaviour, silly word...totally unnecessary
