    Ok I confess....I do know the answer. Back in the day there weren't a lot of varied dog food on the market. One you mention Pedigree Chum but the most popular at the time was Chappie

    The main content of this was grounded meat, fish and fish bone. With all the content of the fish bone it created excess calcium which dogs couldn't digest hence the white s.hit. Fruits and vegetables were pretty nonexistent at the time. Things have now though changed for the good of the pooch.
