We're all pretty familiar with the way the Beatles, The Stones, Elton John and The Bee Gees really caught on in the States and became established artists. These last two quizzes reflect that. But I never knew that, for example, Billy Idol was so popular here. He still tours extensively in the US (albeit in fairly small venues) and his family actually spent four years living in the New York area when he was a small boy - according to Wiki. Petula Clark is another one who I never knew was massively well known.
Here's the full list CT. I did use most of them except some that never even featured in the UK, most from 2000 onwards and I didn't include all the Beatles as they are too easy

There was almost a 10 year gap from 1997 to 2006 when nobody from the UK had a No1 in the US.

Well done Mrs. CT in finally bringing this one to a close and an end to the list of UK artists that had or featured on US No1 hits. I left out most of the ones in the 21st Century and judging on how long the ones I did include survived it was a good job I did

Eh? 21st Century ? When the hell did that happen CAM? Ive only recently fired up the old Amstrad again since shutting it down because of the horrendous possibility of and end of the world due to The Millennium Bug. How many survived ? I did notice recently people walking around with masks on, is this due to the fall out ?

Thanks, CAM. Really enjoyed seeing that full list. Some fascinating stuff:

I never knew Wham/George Michael was that popular here. Right up there with the Beatles and Elton John

Interesting to see America on the list. Technically correct since they formed in the UK and recorded their No 1 hits there but of course all the group members were US nationals whose parents were based in UK with the US military.

Amazing how interest in music from UK tales off to nothing by 1996 for ten years and then only comes back very spottily right up to the present day - largely thanks to Adele. Popular music has become quite segmented and defined by national rather than international taste.

The complete lack of high end chart success by The Kinks is an interesting story. They toured in the US in 1965 as part of the British invasion but, because of a spat with the main American Musicians Union on that tour, they were banned from playing in the US for four years - hence the lack of a no 1 hit when they were at the height of their fame. They came back in 1969 but were largely unknown and finished up playing high school gymnasiums because nobody would give them big venue bookings at first. (I know this from some local history. People we know saw them play a high school prom dance in a nearby town, Lafayette CA, that year...)
