Thanks, CAM. Really enjoyed seeing that full list. Some fascinating stuff:
I never knew Wham/George Michael was that popular here. Right up there with the Beatles and Elton John
Interesting to see America on the list. Technically correct since they formed in the UK and recorded their No 1 hits there but of course all the group members were US nationals whose parents were based in UK with the US military.
Amazing how interest in music from UK tales off to nothing by 1996 for ten years and then only comes back very spottily right up to the present day - largely thanks to Adele. Popular music has become quite segmented and defined by national rather than international taste.
The complete lack of high end chart success by The Kinks is an interesting story. They toured in the US in 1965 as part of the British invasion but, because of a spat with the main American Musicians Union on that tour, they were banned from playing in the US for four years - hence the lack of a no 1 hit when they were at the height of their fame. They came back in 1969 but were largely unknown and finished up playing high school gymnasiums because nobody would give them big venue bookings at first. (I know this from some local history. People we know saw them play a high school prom dance in a nearby town, Lafayette CA, that year...)
